Riding a child

With the proper gear, I would say as soon as they can balance on a pedal bike. They make cycles so small, I remember my 6 yr old neighbor having one growing up. Can they take hits and falls well?

He rides a dirt bike very well and wants to ride with me on my bike, but I am not sure. He is five.

I have seen someone many times coming out of CRE with a kid that is at the very most 2 years old on the back of a bike. Kid had this weird harness thing that attached to the parent... everytime I see it I think that person is crazy 
I just think that is to little. I wouldn't want my kids on the back of one but at 8/9/10 I would probably be ok with it. If your kid already rides a dirt bike I would think he would be ok.

It's now illegal to allow children under twelve to use ATVs or dirt bikes because they contain lead. The government is concerned they might eat the battery.
As far as riding on the back of a motorcycle, as long as they can put their feet on the passenger pegs, it's legal (with a helmet).

It's not illegal for them to ride, it's illegal for the smaller ATVs/dirtbikes to be sold. So if you have one or can find one through a private party, you're fine. Although you can't have them professionally serviced and can't buy parts for them, so at some point everyone will be SOL.

My friend gave me a harness thing to try, but I don't know if I want him strapped to me that way. He rides and he knows about leaning and he can reach the foot pegs, but he is mommy's little boy and I don't know if I am ready. Thanks for the replies.

Well, my daughter is now 15, she's been riding with me about 4 years.. SO 11 is my answer for now.
She got her first 500 mile ride in when she was 12, and she really wants to beat that. I think she wants to pillion a Saddle Sore, 1000 miles in 24 hours. I doubt I'd do that, as in doing it, the rider isn't really at 100%, and I have a problem with my daughter on my bike if I'm at less than 100%. That and I ALWAYS worry about her falling asleep on the back of the bike.

I was thinking about 10, but that is five more years of telling him no and listening to him cry about it. I didn't even think about him falling asleep on the back; yikes!!
