I understand correctly he's facing MANDATORY time for brandishing and I don't see how he gets out of mandatory.

Shawn Taylor's case brings to light an important facet of gun ownership, and that is "Law-Abiding Citizen." Much like Spiderman's "with great power comes great responsibility" line, guns are easy to get and easy to carry here, but it's ultimately up to the person to follow the law and act responsibly when armed. Taylor didn't, so I think they should sentence him to a year in prison.

And if I purchased a gun from out of state I had to drive 40 miles to the nearest FFL dealer on Cobb Island to get it transferred, and still had to deal with a ten day waiting period even though after finding the gun, negotiating a price, sending the money, and awaiting delivery more than ten days had usually passed before the gun got to the FFL holder. And if I went to a show and found two pistols I wanted, I could only buy one a month. Also, I now had limits on what guns I could even buy, or couldn't buy if they weren't on the Approved Firearms list.

Problems... problems... problems...

After moving to Florida I was able to go to the Clay Country Sheriff's Office and get a fingerprint card made (cost $5), get a copy of my DD214 discharge papers (cost .15), and complete one form and send it along with a $79 fee to Charles Bronson (no kidding), our Secretary of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and less than a month later I had my CCP. I can now go into any gun store, pawn shop, or gun show, show them my CCP, and walk right out the door with any pistol, assault weapon, shotgun, etc., that I want after I've paid for it. No waiting periods, federal or state. Plus I have seven dedicated gun stores (including one Class III dealer) within 30 miles of me, and about 40 pawn shops that also sell firearms. There are also no gun lists that ban firearms model by model.

During the "Assault Weapon Ban" i purchased a few "Safe" long guns. in actuality they were the same as those listed in the AWB but missing a threaded muzzle.
2 (Bushmaster version of an AR, and an FN-FAL) of them were purchased at Silverado Gun shows, paid for and picked up on the same day (not sure if its the same, but at the time they were considered long guns, same as shotguns, and there wasnt a waiting period).
2 were purchased from a Gun Dealers Shops (Maadi from Action Suitland) (and an HK-91 from Wolf in waldorf) had to wait... 7 days i believe for those two.
the Correct Grade Garrand, also had no waiting period, but the M14 did (figure that out)

numerous handguns were purchased before and after the AWB (when they imposed the smaller magazine capacity) and also had to wait on them. but if i remember correctly, that was one thing the Brady Bill made easier, since instead of waiting upwards of 2-3 weeks (pre Brady) for the Police to "clear" my purchase it was cut down to 7 days. the Magazine rule was stupid anyways, i'd either go accross the bridge to Alexandria to get high cap magazines there, or a "Friend" would purchase them from Cheaperthandirt.com (<--Linky)

I had a buddy who's father left him a Bolt Action 12 gauge and a Smith&Wesson K Frame 357. he wasnt interested in either so he wanted to give them to me. we went to the Maryland State Police (up in Linthicum/BWI since we worked up there) and filled out the neccessary transfer paper work. the trooper had no issues, was friendly and helpfull. he did tell us that i could take possession of the 12 gauge, but that my buddy had to hold onto the Pistol for 7 days (background check), after that, if he didnt hear from them, i could then take possesion. we of course waited the mandatory 7 days.

The AWB was a federal law that banned the manufacture or importation of selected firearms. Maryland's supplemental restrictions on "assault weapons" came later. Also the AWB banned the manufacture and import of high-capacity magazines, but not the sale. Maryland laws ban the sale. Was the waiting period seven days? I remember ten days? I also remember going to a gun store in Charleston S.C. during the Brady Days and being told that the state of S.C. does not observe the Brady Act and there was no waiting period for handguns... which surprised the hell out of me.

The only time I sold a firearm in Maryland was an AR-15A2, and I had to make three trips to the barrack because twice the buyer wasn't able to make his appointment. Then when we finally did get there, and the MSP saw the rifle, the questions started coming. No "Officer Friendly" for us. :eyebrow:

Now all I have to do is post an ad, show the gun, take the money, and we're done.

BTW, do you still have your M-14? I bought one in 1981, new, for $700 and traded it for a presentation engraved Walther P-38 in 1984. I wish I still had that M-14 though, and I'm still waiting for the prices to come down. That's why I was hoping the AWB would be re-enacted as that was one of the rifles that would have been next to get the parts gun treatment.

I asked what you THOUGHT would happen to him based on your being down there and likely hearing the outcome of similar cases on a regular basis.

As for what problems I went through...pretty similar to Bruz...I even got mine trasfered through the guy on Cobb Island :yay:

Here's my story...I decided which gun I wanted to get (Beretta 92FS Vertec) and went about trying to find one. I tried the Tackle Box...their USED guns cost more than a new gun should cost! Plus, the owner is a jerk. That was also when I got the introduction to MD gun laws...got to watch a "gun safety" video ($)...new guns must come with a fired round from the manufacturer (ballistic fingerprinting)...new guns made after Jan 1, 2001 (I think that's the year) must have an internal trigger lock (there were only 5 guns ON THE PLANET that met that requirement at the time). Bottom line, when I actually did find the gun that I wanted and met the requirements (not many Vertecs before the deadline for trigger locks), it cost $200 more than if you bought the same gun in a less restrictive state. Screw that...went for a used one. Finally found one online that was slightly used and made before the trigger lock cut-off date. Found the closest transfer agent (in Cobb Island...~1.5 hours away), coordinated with him, and bought it. Gun shows up, I go look at the gun, fill out paperwork, and go home. A few days later, I get to make the trip all over again to pick up the gun.

There is a guy closer. LP City. There are lots of handguns that are legal in Maryland now. You can look them up here. http://www.mdsp.org/ and follow the link for Firearms / Permits / Licensing. You maybe right, its been a bit since i purchased a "More Dangerous than another" firearm but i though it was 7 days

yeppers still have it, havent shot it in a while though (marriage horses kids blah blah). i made the mistake (pre AWB) of selling a firearm, i wished i had kept, and havent sold anything since (i still have 2 friggin single shot .410's that "The Boy" learned with)
My bud introduced me to the Civilian Marksmanship Program years ago, thats how i came by both the Garand and the M14

Yeah on Purchase of Post Ban Hi Caps, you can still find Hi-Caps that were Instate before the ban, but they are Pricey. I've seen Thompson mag's go for $150 sheesh.

When I bought a Ruger P944T I was told military service "Cleared" you and the only other requirement was the wait period. In '05 I bought 2 handguns without much problem.
