Anyone ever use this for their dog's Arthritis? Just wondering, my Vet put my dog on this yesterday and I'm worried about the long term effects with the liver. Thanks in advance!

How old is your dog?
BrassieChic said:He's an 11 y/o Rottie! Why?
cattitude said:Because there are other things you can use, like glucosamine, which don't have the side effects that rimadyl can have.
I just prefer a more holistic approach to treating my dogs.
Not that I don't love the vet I use, but I find (just like people doctors) they tend to over prescribe meds.

Do you think it would be alright to give "Golden Retriever (stinky), the Missing Link Plus?
Glucosamine for young dogs that don't show signs of arthritis safe?
No, still stinky.cattitude said:Is she improving?
DoWhat said:No, still stinky.
From what she has told me, yes.cattitude said:Are you doing any of the things that DidWhat and I discussed?
It almost killed my lab with in 3 days! Deramaxx is much better. for some reason, Labs and Goldens had very bad problems with rimadyl. My 13 y.o. mixed breed gets Synovi G on his food. It's glucosamine, MSM creatine and some other stuff- got it from my vet. I also give him chondroprotec- its an injection( generic Adequan). His joints are terrible, and it has really helped.BrassieChic said:Anyone ever use this for their dog's Arthritis? At first he just seemed blah, then drooly ( nausea ) wouldn't eat then he vomitted what looked like coffee grounds which is what old blood looks like. good luck with your dog . I'd take him off rimadyl, I also knew a lady who lost a golden for the same reason.BrassieChic said:Oh my gosh that's terrible. I'll have to look into the other things. I knew I had heard some bad stuff with the Rim. He's on a joint supplement called Nupro which is supposed to be very good.
What kind of symptoms did your dog show on the Rim.? I need to know what to look for. Hubby wants to keep him on it for a week but I'm not that gung ho about it! I just want to do the best thing I can for him with the least amount of side affects. THanks!
Sorry for your loss.Labs4Me said:About 11 years ago we put our Corgi on it. She died 2 weeks later from severe liver and kidney damage.. DGP has been extremely popular! http://www.doggonepain.com/ There was a whole article about it in the Whole Dog Journal a few months ago.

Personally you couldn't pay me to ever give Rimadyl to my dogs! About 11 years ago we put our Corgi on it. She died 2 weeks later from severe liver and kidney damage. Her bloodwork was fine the day the vet prescribed it. Your dog's soreness may appear to improve with Rimadyl but the damage being done to their internal system is horrible.
As for natural supplements...alot of times dogs do really well when you cycle through different joint supplements over time. I have one of my horses on Run Free (which is available for dogs too). It has shark cartilage for the chondroitins, glucosamine, flax seed, MSM and Ester C (vit. C). It's fantastic! There are also some great herbal supplements with devil's claw, meadowsweet and willow that work very well.
