Ring or Nest camera to discourage miscreants?

Power with Control
Don't blame the judge without knowing the facts. SA will cut plea deals because their case isn't strong and juries are total retards.
I had the misfortune of sitting on a jury, people take literally the phrase, "beyond a reasonable doubt". Actually they one up that, the remove the word "reasonable:" and come up with all sorts of "what if"" scenarios

I know what you mean, the word "reasonable" is the issue.

  1. Police report three cases of the two individuals fighting previously over a woman.
  2. Womans trailer has door knocked in by two guys, her ex, one of the two men above and his brother, the ex is armed.
  3. Above fact given in witness statements by the woman, her new guy, the second guy in point number 1, and two friends, one of whom takes a bullet in the leg during the entry and then goes to Moms trailer instead of the hospital.
  4. Woman and new guy hole up in the bedroom with a matress against the door while intruders rage and fire a few rounds through the door .
  5. Police find said ex and his brother in posession of the firearm shortly thereafter.
  6. On the stand, everyone gets amnesia except the cops.

One bright light lady on the jury insists that all other facts dont matter since on the stand they recant what they told the cops that night. "Lady, is it remotely resaonable that two other guys decide that night, after three days of the new guy and the ex beefing in the streets of Lex Park to tear up your trailer and not steal anything? what are the friken odds? Eventually we browbeat her into seeing reality. We being every single person in the jury room.

but sometimes it's the judge.

Regarding license plate numbers: in the incidents we've had, it's only been people walking around the neighborhood from car to car or porch to porch. Besides, I'm 200 feet back from the street. I'd never see a license plate on camera.

Do you think those "You're on camera" signs do any good? Do they at least make people choose less obviously guarded homes? Or am I giving too much credit to a crackhead looking for a few bucks in a glovebox?

They make cameras that would allow you to see that far.

The signs can't hurt. They're cheap enough.

True... but no camera on the market has the resolution to see a license plate 200 ft away, plus a wide view of the parking area. That forces multiple cameras. $$$$$

Fortunately, my neighbor's camera (his house is much closer to the street, right next to my driveway) usually catches the stuff happening out in the street.

Sure there is.
The Axis Q1659 will see a 70ft-wide viewing window at 200ft length and 20' mounting height. That's with 76px/ft.

You'd need an IR-illuminator for night viewing, but it'll get a good picture that would get not only a plate number, but likely the face of the driver.

Just for reference, Axis's office in Northern VA has cameras mounted to their building for testing. You can zoom into the Washington Monument.

Okay, sure, if I spend $5K on a system. Not so sure I need that to watch for the idiots looking to steal a dashcam or a few pop CDs from my car.

We have a ring above our door it's solar and it works great, very easy to install and I was surprised at how great the picture was ,very happy with it.

All I was thinking was a camera that would allow me to check who was at my front door from my phone or computer.
It would be nice to say, "WTF do you want". But I don't need or want cloud storage or recordings.
Like doorbell rings, I answer from phone and tell the traveler that they can buzz off, I'm busy with something more important (taking a dump).
