Head on Collision Leaves Five Hospitalized | Southern Maryland News Net
Below is a copy of the actual email from Jonathan Riffe, the Fire Chief at Huntingtown VFD
We had a two-car head on accident at the Route 2 Park & Ride in Sunderland with 5 priority 1 patients. I arrived on location as the call was being dispatched and assisted 5-6 bystanders with removing the 3 males from the burning vehicle. 2 of the patients were not breathing and bystander CPR was begun at my request on both males. The third male was in and out of consciousness. I walked to the 2nd vehicle and found the female driver in and out of consciousness asking for her baby. Another bystander and I began frantically rummaging through the back seat and found an 8 year girl also in and out of consciousness. I was on scene approximately 5-6 mins before FD apparatus arrived.
I want you express my gratitude and thanks to your members for their actions on today's incident. We had more than enough manpower (over 40 volunteers responded to the sene), sufficient apparatus and communications went well. At the conclusion of the incident I had all personnel report to the IC post for a quick debriefing and critique. Everybody remained calm and collected and the end result was positive. The two males that had CPR performed on them WERE revived by the bystanders performing CPR. All 5 patients were flown to local trauma centers via 3 helicopters (Trooper 2, Trooper 7 and Eagle 1) I'm fortunate to have been involved in the incident, in command, chief of a great department and chair of chief council. We have a great system in Calvert and its because of all of you. Again, thanks and please spread this amongst your rank and file.
To Communcations---excellent job by the dispatchers working the call. Please forward this to them too!
