So Rufus has been doing my horses feet on a regular schedule for as long as I have had my horses (about 3 years) I basically allow him to choose every 6-8 weeks when he would like me to come out there. But today he told me I should find a new ferrier (I do have one more visit and am going to doulbe check that he was serious, but I have a hard time imagining him joking like that, plus there was no giggle). I am nearly heartbroken, so looks like I too am on the prowel for a ferrier :cds:.....anybody know someone that comes up to N Charles County/ Southern PG Accokeek area?

I am extremely flexible willing to work with a preestablished routine in the area and regularly trim my horses feet, no shoes, just a pedicure please and they are VERY well behaved. 2 horses.

Wheres that new one that was advertising for work??

There was a ad in the classified section under horses. She has a website you can check out as well.
LOL I told my children they need to be farriers when they grow up. Seems to be a desperate need for farriers in this area.

It's a quite simple process - easy to learn if you don't want shoes. I did my own horses for years. Unfortunately, too old to help you now.

I heard that Rufus is backing off some that's all. He is over loaded. You could stop by Loveville leather and talk to Elam. His son also does horses. I use to use his son Walter until he decided that he wanted to farm more than trim and shoe. He was good at what he did and his brother I have heard good things about. I use Pat Riffle now because I don't have the time to ship them to the amish. He is good at what he does, but costly....Good luck in your search...

Tim Hamilton does an outstanding job. He focuses on a natural trim for barefoot horses taking many things into consideration in balancing a horse's hoof. He looks at the pastern angle to get the angle of the hoof. He looks at the medial/lateral balance of the hoof and at the same time the semtry of the hoof to know where to trim and balance. He also looks at the toe lengh to help balance the foot at the end. His number is 301-904-0383.

I also use Katrina Ranum. In 6 months she turned my previously shod horse, who used to trip a lot and even lose his footing completely at the canter on the lunge, into a surefooted, solid hoofed critter who never chips and wears almost perfectly evenly. Big recommendation from me!

I can understand, we've had many a conversation about him backing off a bit. I was just hoping I wouldnt be one of them. As its been though, his decision... but breaking up with my farrier is hard to do. :buddies:

Pat does/ did my nieghbor, havent seen him in a while.

farriers in the area

Pat has lost him temper with our really quiet quarter horse after he quicked him. not only did we have to make a hospital trip because when the horse was quicked he hurt the handler, but pat didn't pull the shoe back off or put enough nails back into the shoe to keep it on, so the horse pulled it and stepped back on it, lodging the toe clip between the white line and the sensitive laminae.

it has taken me 2 years to get the horse calm about doing trims.

I have to admit I was warned prior about Pat's temper.

is angus still doing horses in Charles county? i know you could trailer there, I think that who Stueart Pittman uses. he has done shoes forever but is older now and will only do really well behaved horses that you take to him.

I used Dave Kosack for my horse when he had 4 shoes, he was expensive and kept charging me for when my horse was losing shoes within a week of him being there, but he is pretty good.

we use Elam's son, Raymond.. he is reasonable .. my horse who is has had really bad feet keeps all 4 shoes on longer than six weeks (i used to have to do every 5). Walter was great at shoeing, but in my opinion Raymond is better with the horses because he takes a greater interest in training them.

hmmm I don't know who this person is, but, if a farrier kicked or hit my horse
he would find himself being escorted off my property while picking shot out of his azz.

I agree that a farrier shouldn't loose his temper with any horse.

Having said that, and having a husband that is doing horse's feet (on a very limited bases) I will tell you IT'S NOT THE FARRIER'S JOB TO TRAIN YOUR HORSE.

My hubby has WAY too many nasty bruises, scrapes, pulled muscles, stomped on feet, etc. for me to be quiet on this subject. last week an especially nasty long yearling who can't even be fly sprayed reared up and two foot slammed him in the chest for his troubles and hubby knows horses believe me. He also knows how to keep himself positioned safely and this little bugger spun around so quick i was shocked. He also took an hour and a half doing ground work on another 6 y/o gelding before he could lift a rear foot on it. It's the owners job to ensure the animal is safe for general care and those care providers.

Before hubby started doing our horse's feet, if Tim came and the horse misbehaved even a little hubs would do some ground stuff, and if it didn't work, he'd say nope, do him next time I want to keep you coming back to do my horses (and keep you safe), we'll make it so you can do the horse next time.

My husband really likes doing feet. He also likes training. The mere 30-35 bucks he charges per horse is no where near worth the amount of emotional and physical toll not to mention actual physical danger he puts himself into each time he goes to do someone's horse who has never had their feet picked up, or who is so disrectful of people that it cow kicks him for trying to do what needs to be done.

Don't complain people, TRAIN your horse for the farrier. It's not his job to do it. If he does PAY him or someone else for the training necessary for the necessities of horse care and husbandry. this would include holding your horse's head so he doesn't BITE the farrier, and it's tail so the farrier doesn't get a sliced eye by a swinging tail swishing flies "because poor lil Alpo won't let me fly spray him...sorry". YES we've heard that one too....sigh.

And NO your horse doesn't "have a problem with that foot, because he won't let anyone touch that one foot". He has a problem in his head. Get it worked out peeps. Don't expect someone else too do it for free, just so they can do their job for 30 bucks.

He's been my farrier for about 8 years of regular appointments every 6-8 weeks. Have never seen him lose his temper - ever. Sometimes what an owner feels is a well behaved horse does not align with the norm and typically those owners do not take well to any disciplinary action by a professional.

Well that depends......If my farrier is under a horse and the horse shows his azz for no reason I give my farrier permission to bust azz if needed. Now if he bust azz and I don't feel the horse deserves it then I will bust azz myself. In all my years of having horses I do make sure that my horse stands mannerly for the farrier. He isn't there to train a horse to pick up his feet and hold them up. That is the owners job.

Yep I agree, but I have never seen my horses misbehave for the farrier, I guess that is the difference. The only problem I have with mine, is keeping them awake during the trimming, I guess they think it is their own personal spa treatment!

I used Pat for one apt, scheduled a second one, and didn't see him for the second. I called to find out why he didn't make our second apt, and it turned out that he had come to out but he never checked in the barn for hubby, so he ended up leaving without doing their feet. When I got home and found out their feet hadn't been done, I called him, at which time I told him Hubs WAS there waiting for him all day and never saw him. He said he wasn't coming back. Neither one of us was nasty, I was dissappointed my horses didn't get done and wanted to reschedule, and he just decided he wasn't coming back.

We never missed an apt with Tim Hamilton in almost 4 years using him, even after hubs started doing our horses, we still had Tim do 3 or 4 every time he came, and he did them when hubs was injured this winter. Then Tim missed his apt in late Dec (he had something come up and forgot to call). I guess he figured out hubs was doing ours anyways, so we just didn't reschedule that one. We're still friends, and I'd recommend Tim to anyone. He's SUPER with the horses and peeps.

Pat's loss IMO.

Tim is very nice but he stood me up on a couple of appointments so I never called him back.
