The United States does not have "friends". At best, it has allies. Seventy years ago, our allies included Russia, and our enemies were Germany and Japan. Things change.
The former Soviet Union is not necessarily the belligerent it was during the Cold War, but make no mistake - they are not our friends. Their position over Syria is proof of that. Our throwing under the bus of Poland a few years back, when we scuttled their missile defense on the 70th anniversary of their invasion by Russia - we acknowledged we can be bullied by them.
The Russian people do not love Communism, but they resent the loss of prestige their former position as a world power gave them. They want it back.
