Thank God for death.
Yeah. Paul said it.
Philippians 1:21-24

21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

22But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose.

23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better;

24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

This definitely supports the states decision that to graduate high school you need to take a competency test on US Government/Civics. My son's class will be the first to do so.
I'm really not sure why the other two tests are Algebra and Biology though.
Really? When I was in HS (PG County - 1992), there were four tests (I think) we had to pass to graduate:
Civics
Math
Reading/Comprehension
I think there was a fourth, but can't remeber what it was (science maybe?)

I definitely remeber the civics one because that was the least intuitive for me and I actually had to study. There was also a mandatory civics class to help prepare you for the test.

I graduated in 81. No tests then. They haven't had to do them for years (or perhaps certain counties haven't so it wasn't statewide). There was a big hullabaloo to get it done - lots of press over the past five years. My kid graduates in 2010.

You are right. It is sad. And think, these people are going to vote and someday run this country. We are doomed.
But this is nothing new. When I was a kid, they did these exact same man-on-the-street quizzes and people were just as dumb back then.

I think you should have to take a civics quiz in order to register to vote. If random people do not know or care about the political process or how government works, no biggie. It's when they go off and start marking up ballots that it becomes a problem.

You realize what anyone who suggests this gets labeled? The leftist thought is that we are trying to exclude an ethnic group. Last I checked, stupidity isn't an ethnicity, but then again I'm not a democrat.

Bingo.

The minute you suggest that people are stupid, liberals automatically assume you're talking about black people. Interesting, isn't it?

I got red karma for my "some people just aren't worth a ####" comment in the immigration thread, indicating that I was referring to non-whites, when I made no such ethnic or racial distinction.

Go to 7-11 this morning and start asking the older folks some civics questions, the 40 somethings;

I don't care if people get them exactly, text book correct. You're gonna have piss poor luck in finding people who even have a rough idea or that even care.
Exactly my thoughts last night. What does this quiz actually prove? Well, that there are some idiots in the world. Really? I wasn't aware of that.:sarcasm:

Secondly, is it the failure of this generation or the failure of that generations parents to teach the basics?

Hannity's quiz is entertaining but that's about it. It doesn't really explain much of anything.

It is not meant to explain but to entertain. It does show how poor the education system is and the lack of involvement by those interviewed.

That may be true to an extent but I don't think it proves anything empirically across the board. We see a few idiots on the tube and automatically associate them with everyone else. The only thing that is proven in this experiment, if you want to call it that, is that there are idiots in the world.

Maybe. But if you are taking a random sample, even a very small one, you would expect the results to be more varied if the knowledge level was varied. Now I have no idea how the people were chosen, but it they just grabbed people at random, it is a bit telling.
