There is in fact sinking type lines that will get your fly down deep, but that's a another technique! baby steps...
I caught some out around Cedar rip one day. Little ones breaking and guys throwing all kinds of stuff at them. They were after those little silversides though and didn't want big spoons or bucktails. The flies worked good that day.
