At the moment Carrie is proably the hottest female singer. She has just about made a clean sweep of all the awards this year for female singer, and a grammy or two also.
Even Kellie Pickler who came in around fifth last year on Idol is doing quite well in country this year.
Idol's lost all legitamacy to me this year. All the better singers were voted off early. I think Melinda is going to win all, but not many people will be around to watch compared to past years. I am personally pulling for Jordin Sparx because I think she's the best vocalist, but Idol's a popularity contest and Melinda's got something that resignates with the audience, I'm not sure what though. Great voice, but Jordin is better. I've watched Idol since year one and gave up after Gina got voted off, I thought she was the only one who was original. Everyone else sounds the same. :shrug:
And I don't like Kelly Pickler.

Should I feel culturally deprived in not watching American Idol, or is it not worth the bother? It was years before I found out that "Because of You" was by Kelly Clarkson. I might watch the show if the contest was for songwriters.

Most people who whine about the show do so because they don't like pop music. I've never had a problem with it, myself, although I prefer rock and alternative (that's why I always pull for contestants like Bo Bice, Gina Glockson and Chris Daughtry) but bubblegum pop doesn't make me want to dig my eyeballs out, like country ####-kicking music does.
I like Simon's naked cruelty, and I like the suspense of who's head is next on the chopping block.
I would not say that you're culturally deprived. It's a popular show and people talk about it - but I don't think you're missing out on any real culture, unless you think it's worth it to know the names of these people during their 15 minutes.

Songwriting is a talent in itself, and singing is also a talent in itself, and I don't dismiss someone who has talent in one but not the other.

Someone obviously tried to make me not vote for the men on purpose my computers at school got updated but then on tuesday they broke down and couldn't be useable for like 48 hours. They just got back up today and now Sanjaya is gone I SMELL A RAT

As soon as his name was read, the website went off-line because of all the traffic. They came on about an hour later gloating that they had carried him so far and announcing a new poll to elect the next votefortheworst champion.
It's really fun to watch this site as the competition moves on.

Good point about not being culturally deprived. My original question had to do with feeling old and out of touch, since I just turned 40 recently. Yesterday I saw the list of the songs for Guitar Hero and I didn't recognize many of the bands. (Wolfmother? The Sword? The Living End? Avenged Sevenfold?) Keep in mind that I have never even owned a game system, unless you count my family's Atari 2600 when I was in high school. If my life were a Twilight Zone episode, I would wake up and find that my home had only rotary phones and knob-dial televisions.
