Those are just inane, not sappy. Sappy is the movies Love Story or Terms of Endearment. Don't Take the Girl belongs in that category. This stuff goes all out to try to emotionally manipulate you, making you feel inhuman if you aren't crying by the second verse.

The other day I heard Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for the first time in years. Man, wasn't this song overdramatic?

I found out that this song and "Holding Out for a Hero" were written by Jim Steinman, who was Meat Loaf's songwriter. That makes sense to me. Steinman has a strange gift for writing rock mini-operas.
