Stop Staring!!!!!
Folks, I have been feeding multiple police/fire scanners into my server for some time now. Tweaking things and trying to figure out who wants to listen to what and such. I think I about have things set up they way I like it and it has been running very smoothly.
I do this a bit differently than most. I feed the audio into my server and users have to download a small application (TEAMSPEAK) to listen to the audio feeds. I find it works very well is I do not have to pay for a website to feed the audio to like I would if I were using something like Real Player.
Once a user comes into my server they can choose one of several scanners to listen to. Usually I keep one scanner listening to everything in St. Mary's County. Then I have another dedicated to only St. Mary's law Enforecment related communications and then one more dedicted to St. Mary's Fire EMS related communications.
This works rather well as a user can come into the server and for St. Mary's can go the "COMBINED" channel comprising of everything and then if some interesting is going on on the police side they can choose to drop down into the police channel and follow the action without listen to the fire side. They can also do the same thing if something interesting is going on on the fire side. Just go to the fire channel and you won't hear the police traffic.
I also have one feed dedicated to everything out of Calvert County. Unfortunately for lack of Computers I can not divide this up like I do for St. Mary's County.
Another forumite friend who lives in Calvert does feed Calvert County as well but he is out of town at the moment and has temporarily taken his feed down until he returns. Once he does I will likely replace my Calvert Feed with one from PAX .
A couple of things worth mentioning here:
1. While users are in the server they are able to live text chat with any and all other people listening. Works pretty well as they can discuss what is going on during the busy times and then when it is slow they can text chat about anything they want to. I also have a dedicated voice chat channel set up and users can drop in there and voice chat with other users of the server if they so choose. Kinda cool.
2. They way I do this if there are any other users who would like to share the audio from their scanners with others, I can add any number of channels any they can share their audio. They only need about a $5 patch cord from Radio Shack. I am hoping to get some Charles County listeners who might consider doing this as I am unable to receive Charles from my location.
If any of this sounds interesting and you would like to check it out I invite you to join the " St. Mary's Online Scanner" Personal Forum. Once in there there are instructions on how to gain access to the server. It's very easy and takes under 10 minutes including download time.
For those unfamiliar with joining Personal Forums. Go into your USER CP. On the L/H side of the page find and select "Group Memberships". Then sroll down and find and select "St. Mary's Online Scanner". And select the option to join that group. Once I see that you have requested access I will grant it and there ya go.
Once in there is a sticky thread you need to look at. "Accessing the St. Mary's Online Scaner Server". This is a step by step guide on accessing the scanner server.
Anywho. There you go.
