:faint: The Grudge was an excellent scary movie. I still have the creeps from that one!!!
Oh, yeah, I forgot that one. Looks like the hills have eyes and the grudge...

You should avoid The Grudge. It's AWFUL. No gore or suspense. Just constant BOO! scares and they get old... fast.

The Hills Have Eyes, however, is a very good movie. I'd also recommend (of recent horror movies)...

The Devil's Rejects
Hide And Seek
High Tension
Wolf Creek

***

These are ones to definitely avoid as they're mediocre-to-awful...

Alone In The Dark
Boogeyman
The Grudge
When A Stranger Calls
White Noise

To me a perfect horror film has many elements. First, and most importantly, it needs suspense. Not sudden loud noises (BOO!) because those're cheap, but true, undiluted suspense which has you on the edge of your seat. Second, a good story and/or interesting characters. I am tired of 'nubile campers get slaughtered by disguised madman'-type movies. They're tired and kind of useless at this point. Third, creative gore. The third isn't necessary, but it does add lots of visceral impact when a horror film murder isn't completely bloodless.

The Ring was my favorite. I'm not into scary movies that are all blood and gore.

I liked "The Ring," too. I like movies that have a lot of tension in them. Blood and gore are part of scary movies, but I'm not going for movies dominated by it. When I was little I remember watching "The Blob", "the killer bees," and all those movies. Perfect for scaring little kids!
I just finished watching "Final Dest. III"... Next!

The Final Destination movies are awesome. They're not scary per se, but are extremely entertaining and a have great campy feel. They don't want to be taken deadly serious, they just want to entertain people with icky gore and crazy action. I can respect that.

I think the first FD movie is the best, then the third. The second is the worst, in my opinion, but still a slick, fun ride.

I've already rented "Hostel"

I am interested to hear your thoughts on Hostel. It seems to polarize most audiences. A love-it or hate-it kind of movie, if you will. I personally, however, fell into the middle. It had a fascinating, horrifying concept and was quite intense for the last hour. However, I had trouble feeling for the 'heroes.' What an incredibly crass, unsympathetic bunch of loser frat boys they gave us to root for. And I was annoyed by how it bordered on being a softcore porno for the first half hour.

THE scariest movie of ALL TIME...

...the Legend of Boggy Creek.

By far.

Bar none.

Hands down.

When I was 12.

Don't watch it with anyone under 40.

They'll laugh at it.

And you.

Hysterically.

I liked it in general. You summed it up pretty well in your post. Soft porn in the beginning didn't bother me too much. The "heroes" didn't have much personality or depth. I also rented Shyamalan's "The Village". Not a scary movie, but great!

The Village was a good movie. It received such bad word-of-mouth because the ads implied it was an incredibly intense monster movie when, in reality, it was more of an atmospheric romantic drama with minor elements of horror and suspense.

The last horror movies which truly frightened me were The Descent, High Tension, and Wolf Creek. The first one is in theatres and the other two are on DVD. Those are great horror-thriller movies.

The village had me until then stepped out into the modern world, after that I didn't like it.

I didn't mind the concept of the twist ending. The idea of a society being controlled and manipulated through fear tactics is quite relevant in the 21st century. However, the twist could've been presented in a better way. The Rod Serling-style 'gotcha!' kind of lessened the impact, in my opinion.
