What, in your opinion, is the best elementary school in the SOMD area? I am looking to move within the next year and want to base my new location on the schools. Any input would be appreciated.

My son went to Hollywood Elementary, in my opinion it was a very good school, he now goes to Esperanza Middle School, and will then go to Leonardtown High for High School. All very good schools. If you move to the right place in Hollywood you can hit all the good schools in the St. Mary's area. We just happened to be able to buy property in Hollywood that fit into this school district. Good Luck! I really like living in the Hollywood area, nice area to live in.

Northern Part of St. Mary's County have a very good schools.

Town Creek Elementary School
Greenview Knolls Elementary School
Hollywood Elementary School
Oakville Elementary School
Dynard Elementary School
Leonardtown Elementary School
Bannakers Elementary School
Mechanicsville Elementary School
Green Holly Elementary School

The only school I know that doesn't meet the state education requirement is:
Lexington Park Elementary School. However, people who live within the Lexington Park Elementary School district do have a voucher choices to have thier kids to attend Town Creek, Greenview Knolls, or George Washington Carver Elementary School. The buses do come through the neighborhood to transport the kids to school of your choice.

However, not all schools that aren't listed aren't bad cuz there are so many good elementary schools to list. It depends on where you want to live in St. Mary's County.

Pretty soon, the Wildewood housing area will have a brand new elementary school. I believe they are suppose to open sometimes next year or two.

We held out for Town Creek Elementary School. It is a wonderful small neighborhood school that only has approx. 300 students. I wouldn't send my children anywhere else!

I would recommend the northern Calvert area, especially Mt. Harmony, Sunderland and Plum Point Elementary Schools. Each of these three schools were ranked in the top 100 of elementary schools in the state of Maryland (based on test scores), with MHES being #9, SES #39 and PPES #73. PPES is also a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

I forgot that Huntingtown and Mutual were also on there, just below PPES. Overall they ranked Calvert second in the state of Maryland (just below Howard County). You can check out the list as published by the Washington Post here: http://www.calvertnet.k12.md.us/schools/mhes/MSA assessment ranking.htm

We just moved to this area last year (from the southern end of Calvert County) and these were the only 3 elementary school districts that we would look at houses in. They are all excellent. We ended up at Sunderland Elementary and could not be more pleased with the staff and all of the programs, especially enrichment stuff, they have for the kids.

Good luck with your move. :howdy:

What you are talking about is school of choice. You have that if the schools dont pass their ayp testing. We are districted for carver, we go to green holly. thanks to that school of choice. the only prolbem is that the kids are no longer transported. It is only good for a certain amount of time than, if the school passes for 2 years in row, you have to apply to havve the children got to another school and than transport them. It is kinda confusing so if i didtn explain right ia m sorry

What love is all about
I like Hollywood as top and then Green Holly. If possible by the time my oldest starts I want to live somewhere so they can go to Hollywood if not then Green Holly.

While Greenview Knolls was a really good school, I can't say enough good things about the Chesapeake Public Charter School. My daughter has been doing things I would not have imagined her to be doing in the first grade. Things so far have been building a bridge using a budget as well as supplies, studying the phases of the Moon as well as the constalations, and now she is building a car out of items that can be recycled after the contest in Baltimore.

My nephew started out in Hollywood Elementary, and because his teachers wanted his parents to work with him on his reading and handwriting, they moved him to Town Creek where he could get more individualized attention... or the teacher would take him aside every day and work with him on his writing and reading.

So I guess it all depends on the intelligence and willingness to learn of the child as well as the willingness to participate of the parents.
