It's only a fragment of my reasoning Frank. The reasoning displayed in this thread against the seatbelt law is simply further proof that people are so ignorant the Government has to step in and mandate their use.
What ones might they be? You're saying that although I believe the law to be an infringement on my rights, I must be "ignorant" because I disagree with you? MAKE your case, but don't resort to name calling.
I do not agree with even the IDEA that if I am ignorant of such things, the government's job is to "educate" me, anymore than you would agree it is MY job to "educate" you.
I understand my liberties to be more or less boundless with the exception of where they infringe upon the liberties of others. This is where people argue. I may THINK I have the right to never look at an ugly person or eat in a restaurant with people of a certain race - but I don't have that right, and such "liberties" infringe on others. I may think I have the right to play music very loud into the late night hours, but I don't, because THAT does infringe upon others.
What I do in the privacy of my own home, or in my own car, is my own business until it infringes upon someone else - and is a reasonable infringement. I think it is more important that police direct their attentions to the drivers that are CAUSING accidents, than drivers who aren't doing anything (but actually MIGHT become a victim of the crazy reckless guys they OUGHT to be pulling over) and in the tiniest fraction of auto trips, they COULD hurt themselves.
Think of it this way - if you needed to raise cash - what would you have YOUR cops do - sit idly in their cruisers, waiting to ticket the large portion of otherwise law-abiding drivers who aren't belted - or actually drive, find and catch the ones causing the trouble?
Why DOES the law make sense to anyone? This is like requiring kids to wear protective outerwear to the playground, because bullies might pick on them (and fining them, when they don't). Doesn't it make MORE sense, to get the bullies?
