Seizures

I fostered a 4 yr old American Eskimo dog that had seizures (the adoption agency didnt tell us about this problem or they didnt know). Long, expensive story short - After seeing the vet, I did some research and switched his dog food. I found one that did NOT contain a dog food preservative called BHA which has been suspected of causing seizures (along with BHT and Ethoxyquin). To my knowledge...he hasnt had anymore seizures. I spoke to his adopted mom about a year ago and she said he is doing fine. Make sure you check the ingredients of your dog's food....those 3 preservatives need to be avoided if possible.

How is Taz?? Any more episodes? Bandit went through one a couple of weeks ago, or so my neighbor informed me, afterwards! Said that it went on for a while and that he was hitting the back porch pretty hard..Thanks for getting me, we were out front working on moving dirt, he would have been up front with us otherwise. He is a great neighbor otherwise, but can not figure out why he didn't let us know at the time. Oh well, I'm sure that there are even more that we don't know about, but hate to think that he suffers them alone. Anyway, just touching base, knew that you were looking into other possible causes.

I never knew so many dogs suffered with this. My Bluetick also has them. It doesn't seem to happen all that often, but we're starting to worry that it goes on when we're at work or asleep. A good tip from our vet is to keep cotton and alcohol handy. Saturate the cotton and apply to the pads of their feet to keep them from overheating.

I never knew dogs suffered seizures either, or so many. I'll never forget the first time my dog had one, scared me to death. I'll never forget the times when having one he'd try his best to get to where I was. I would stop whatever I was doing and just hold him. All the vet told me I could do was to keep him calm and tell him I loved him. He'd come out of it, then want to go outside.

He hasn't had one since being on phenobarbital (sp?). With the vets concurrance I reduced him to half dose versus the 65mg twice daily and he is doing well and not the slug he was on full dosage. I do think he is becoming a junkie though as he is now coming to us at pill time for his fix.

My sister's weimereiner (sp?) had some pretty bad seizures a few years ago. It was determined that she had gotten into some slug bait and been poisoned.

First symptoms were the eyes... her pupils were different sizes. And she started running into things. Within 24 hours she was suffering seizures. Vet had to put her under for several hours, but I'm not sure if he pumped her stomach or just let the poison run its course while protecting her from seizures with the tranquilizer.

Took the dog a long time to recover. Several months before she was normal again. And she had to wear the cone on her neck for a long time to keep her from licking the bedsores.
