Selling deer...

...still illegal?

I was shocked to learn, looking around for some venison vs. beef information in terms of nutritional comparison, that it is illegal to sell deer meat!

So, being the instinctive capitalist swine I am, I immediately started wondering why in the hell that is and why isn't it changed and why someone doesn't open up a deer meat packing house and start mowing down all these stupid deer.

I was playing golf yesterday in Montgomery County and one of the guys I was with hit a wayward t shot so I yelled 'fore' really loud. Then, not 10 seconds later, I'm on the t and not 10 yards away from us are three deer just grazing away just inside the tree line. Couldn't care less about us.

Too many deer. Deer meat. :buddies:

 Illegal where? Just in MD? People have deer farms. I'm sure as long as it's USDA inspected it's fine to sell.

No, it's strictly illegal.

DNR Reminds Processors of Guidelines for Venison Processing in Maryland

Processors are reminded that they may not sell wild venison in Maryland. Processors may only collect fees to process legally-acquired deer for the individual who provides the deer to the processor.

All you can do is process deer meat for others in Maryland. Seems kind of silly to me.

Someone ounce told me that wild game is the property of the state in which it lives. To kill for personnel consumption is legal, the owner of the property gave their permission. To kill and sell for profit is illegal cause it wasn't technically yours to begin with. the owner of said property said no. probably cause it isn't FDA approved, Taxed, and shot up with hormones and steroids, so the State isn't their fair cut of the profit. of course if it was legal and money is involved the deer population would be like back in the 50's when deer track sightings made front page news.

Ok...

...how hard would it be to test?

Point is, deer tastes good and we got lots of them. There should be a simple supply and demand push to get these stupid, useless creatures on dinner plates across the land sooner rather than later.

Hubby and I buy deer meat from our butcher. Techincally, the butcher is only allowed to charge for the cutting and packaging, not the actual meat itself. Works for us! We can get a nice sized deer for $40. Mmmm...Deer....

I'm sure it would be fairly easy for someone to get some deer meat. There are probably lots of hunters out there who shoot more than they eat. Many farmers donate to FHFH. They'd probably be glad to give a deer to someone who wants it.

...all I want. What I want to do is commit barely constrained genocide on the population around here. And sell it.

The butcher I used for the SoMD Deer Distribution got busted for selling deer. He was selling field dressed deer to people that wanted to butcher their own and lord knows what else he was doing illegally.

It is perfectly legal for a hunter to GIVE a deer to another person and then that person have it butchered. That's what I was doing. Hunter would shoot the deer, give it to me, I paid butcher to cut it and then gave it to the people on the list who then reimbursed me for the butchering with no "Huntr Handling Fee" added on.
