It gets you pretty far, and a lot of it is timing. I remember being p!ssed back in '92, when Bill Clinton was the recipient of similar attention. The press just went crazy for the guy, but he couldn't win a single damned primary or caucus - and they were so relieved when he came in SECOND in New Hampshire, deigning him the "Comeback Kid". I remember saying something "I just know the media is going to elect this guy". It worked for him.
It did NOT work for Howard Dean. There was a point around December/January of 2003/2004 when his nomination was considered a done deal. He was never even a contender. It DID work for Jimmy Carter, because he had done two things that almost everyone does now, but no one had done THEN - write a book and campaign VERY EARLY - because funding wins elections.
So far - I think he's played his hand too early. Hillary has the chops to take him down easily. If Barack is used to people sucking up to him he will go down quickly, good looks or not.
