WASHINGTON (AFP) - Some 30 percent of Americans cannot say in what year the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington took place, according to a poll published in the Washington Post newspaper.

While the country is preparing to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and shocked the world, 95 percent of Americans questioned in the poll were able to remember the month and the day of the attacks, according to Wednesday's edition of the newspaper.

But when asked what year, 30 percent could not give a correct answer.

Of that group, six percent gave an earlier year, eight percent gave a later year, and 16 percent admitted they had no idea whatsoever.

This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd: 48 percent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 percent were older than 65, according to the poll.

Wow, what a sad commentary and absolutely amazing. :frown:

Thats one thing I'll never forget. I wish I could. I still have certificates and crap for working out there, I even have my old DOD badge. I thought about getting rid of the stuff, but I know I should hang on to it

Why would you hang on to something that triggers such negative memories? Let it go. You did your job. Holding on to the stuff isn't letting you move past it.

If you follow the bell curve, 49% of Americans have below average intelligence. So, why does this surprise you? 18% are qualified as mentally retarded.

Dunno. I kinda doubt it. I'm not a huge movie goer anyway. I'm lucky if I catch one flick a year and usually fall asleep.

Do I WANT to see it? Eh. At this point, it's not got my interest peaked enough for me to drive 30-40 minutes to put up with people talking, kids kickin my chair $8 popcorn and $6 sodas.

I know later down the road I'll kick myself if I trash it. Some of my junk is probably worth alot of money.
I have a hardhat with a bunch of limited issue stickers on it, signed by Allen Jackson. I had another one signed by Bo Derek and Donald Rumsfeld.... That one was stolen when I was on another job. Heck I even have the VIP ticket for the 1 year anniversary ceremony when Bush was there.

See the irony???

Even though our seasoned citizens have a hard time remembering what year was 9/11.....

They will remember the time your Mother's Day card was late by one day: in 1979.

Besides that tidbit of irony...I have been mulling over my 1st day address to my students in 10 days...How does one sharpen the point that history is absolutely crucial for citizenship, politics, economics....While their heads are buried in a pile of goo surrounded by hip hop, drugged sports "heroes," and getting condoms.

I do remember what year it was but I think it's fair to give us older people somewhat of a break. Remember in history class you were given dates to memorize and how difficult it was. Consider that us elder people have to attempt to still remember when the war of 1812 was plus any eventful dates since high school. At some stage of your life your own birthday and anniversary are easily remembered, but grandkids birthdays and such need to be written down in a diary. They don't make diaries that thick to make a note on everything.

What's sad is I know high school seniors that don't know what day 9-11 happened on, what cities were largely affected, what large city was most affected by Hurricane Katrina or who the president of Iraq was. Hell, most people don't know who Monica Lewinsky is.
