Septic tank tip

After almost 5 years in our home~ and having bought from a guy we were pretty certain never had it done~ we had Brothers Johnson come out today and suck out the septic tank.
When I would think of it, I'd buy some (in my opinion expensive) Rid-X to flush down the crapper (so it got done a few times a year)
"Tony" told me today that you can buy the yeast (used for baking) in the red packets and it does the exact same thing as Rid-X. I do believe it is a whole lot cheaper.
Of course, this guy has heard all the jokes and been ribbed for what he does for a living...but I was impressed with his professionalism and sense of humor, too and the whole operation ran smoothly...also impressed with the customer service on the phone.
Excuse me, I gotta go :cheesy:

Brothers Johnson is a terrific company. I have always been totally impressed with all of their work. Langford Johnson is one of the nicest men I have ever met, and his brothers and workers are fantastic!!!

BTW, they will ask you if you know how big your tank is. If you don't, call they Health Dept and they will look it up and tell you. I called Calvert and not only did they tell me, the young lady also offered to send me the paperwork for future reference. I received it 2 days later :)

How to Add Good Bacteria to a Septic Tank | eHow.com

Step
3 Flush a packet of brewer's dry yeast down one toilet on the bottom floor of your house once a month. The yeast will help add "good" bacteria to your septic tank and break down waste.

I talked to our septic dude about this when they came to pump last year. They advised us NOT to use any such product...saying that the septic system will break down the material properly and if you add anything to break it down further, that it could actually add too much "stuff" to your drain field and cause problems. In other words, let the septic do its job and everything will be fine.

That is exactly what the guys at CC plumbing told us. If the Septic is working like a charm leave it alone! Draining it or adding to it will only cause problems.

I was impressed because they actually turned our business away and gave us sound advice.

Draining septic tanks rids them of good bacteria.

You have to get your septic tank cleaned out regularly or else the solids truly do solidify in the bottom and eventually will fill your tank causing you to ruin your drain fields... are you saying you don't ever have anyone come empty your tank? :faint:

I know he probably knows his sh!t, but I don't think that's the right kind of yeast, nor is it fermentation you want, but bacteria..

We just had Copsey Septic pump ours last week. He did an excellent job.

The guy said not to use Rid-X or any other septic management product. He said that your tank naturally develops bacteria that breaks down the solids. It builds a layer that floats at the top of the water line and the bacteria breaks it down from the bottom up. Using Rid-X causes the solids to break down on the surface and it can float to the secondary tank and eventually clog the drain field.

He also said that bleach kills the good bacteria that will break down the solids; so avoid using bleach. And baby wipe also don’t break down well and could clog the drain field.

CC came out and pumped our tank last winter. They told me to have it pumped out every three to five years.
