It was clearly intended as an attempt at a racist statement whether the symbol was racist or not.
This is where we part ways. You may be correct in your assessment, but from what little I've read on the incident I haven't seen that there was a definitive statement this was the person's intention. So not (yet) "clearly intended."

The Cubs' statement of an investigation - but one where there was no communication with the individual - and then banning seems a bit quick on the draw. If we are choosing to say the person is "guilty" because "silence brings consent," then I find that a bit problematic, too (as I can understand why the person might choose in this day and age not to have his/her identity revealed).

To me, this person seemed to be trying to get his "ESPN moment" with his peeps back home. In typical NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, etc. fashion, he thought he was being cute. That he got something quite different is a different issue.

Maybe he is a racist and meant exactly what he is being accused of/banned for. But I'm not yet seeing it. Pretty sketchy, to my mind.

As I once heard someone say, "Sometimes, Professor Freud, a cigar is just a cigar."

P.S. I type this as I watch the Cubs-Brewers game. They've been going to Doug Glanville (a favorite player of mine, btw) off and on and everyone I've seen so far (those who are in shot behind him) is keeping their hands in their pockets and being all mannequin-like.

Sad we've gotten to that point.... Chilling that we've gotten to that point. (Again, I point to the Politryks article I recently posted that discussed the dynamics in play here.)

While all true, this is America, the guy knew there was a network camera on him, the announcer was black and he decided to be an ass. It was clearly intended as an attempt at a racist statement whether the symbol was racist or not.

Perhaps he's simply trying to flick off a booger.

Don't know that I'm going to agree with you, but neither of us has any evidence supporting our positions.

Back in the 1990s, this gesture was part of a game called meat gazing. The sign had to be made below the belt closer to the knee. Anyone caught looking was busted. I was still in he navy at th time ans sailors were the only group I ever saw play this prank.

It got to be annoying after a while. Some guys couldn't help themselves and were always doing it. I guess it helped relieve some of the boredom.

I didn't even know there was a white power sign. So I'm guessing if a black fan raised a fist behind a white reporter that he would be banned for life as well. Wow, we really have become a nation of totally over sensitive weenies. I think I would sue the Cubs over this. Is there anywhere it is spelled out that this gesture is expressly forbidden at games?

AoS has a nice write-up. From yesterday, but only just saw it.

The best, most eloquent reply was this one:

11 We don't have to worry about the Government banning our 1st Amendment rights. We have corporate America to do it for us.

For ****'s sake, I don't recognize my country anymore.

I think that pretty well sums up my entire argument for busting up FB, Google, YT, et al. in terms of allowing them as private entities to practice routine discrimination against anyone when the government does not allow much smaller businesses to discriminate against protected classes.

This is how we know all of this is made-up BS. If we buy into the Cubs' thing, then we must buy into it all. And that would just be beyond dumb.

Like, but I don’t like. What a quandary our Country finds herself. Where is O’Rourke’s skateboard, and he is not honoring his ancestors. The Irish were beat the hell up when coming to our country. He is the traitor. God bless the USA.

I am thinking it was a rebuttal to athletes that kneel during our National Anthem; as in not being patriots. It doesn’t get more ironic than this. For example. Maybe the Patriots should change their team name.
