slackers

i mainly feel sorry for the cart guys that have to fish the whole parking lot and not just two concentrated areas now. lol

if you will
OK Burning BuddyLee, that isn't necessarily bad for Giant customers. Plus, even if Giant went down the tubes, less competition might just result in Shoppers getting "lazier" which would result in poorer service or higher prices for Shoppers customers... So who knows what will happen for us SoMDers?

BL, don't believe everything you read in the paper, especially the Washington Post. I know because I work for Giant and here are some details about what is going on:

1) Giant is owned by the Dutch holding company Royal Ahold. They have owned us for about 5 years now and have no intention of selling us. We make too much money for them to ditch.

2) In order to save money on overhead, two of Ahold's supermarket chains are combining some of their office level operations and support staff. That's Giant of Landover and Stop and Shop. Unfortunately that might mean that I'll be laid off, but I've been thinking about changing companies for a while anyway, so I'll get over it.

3) Giant will open 5 more stores in the DC area before the end of this year, and has very aggressive growth plans of opening 15 more stores per year for at least the next two years.

That's the facts that came out of a staff meeting we at the Landover offices had to attend on Friday. Too bad for Shoppers that we're not going away. :bawl:

tlatchaw,

I hope you have read my comments about Giant. Please let your co-workers know how much a pleasant attitude is appreciated. When I shop at Giant, I am greeted with smiles and people that ask if they can help. The cashiers are friendly, I don't hear all about their complaints or problems and they actually talk to me.

I shopped at SFW yesterday because they have cereal that I need. I couldn't find something and the lady at the information desk was friendly and helpful. Kudos to her! However, the cashier gave me the obligatory "hi, how are you" and that was it. (I bought almost $100 worth of groceries so it wasn't like I was there the length of time it takes to buy one item) Not once did she smile or even show any type of emotion.

Again, I would much rather pay more and shop in a pleasant atmosphere. Customer service goes a long way.

your lucky

your lucky she even said hi i dont get that at food lion. i think shoppers and giant are about the same you guys just need to give it a chance. maybe its just a coincidence that you get a good cashier at giant and a bad one at shoppers. or maybe you got a giant cashier when they first came in for work and are ready to go and are more nice than 8 hours later lol. ill tell ya its a crappy job to stand there for 8 hours saying the same things over and over but as i say if you dont like your job then quit. lol. its a good thing im not a cashier at shoppers or i would have quit along time ago lol.

A better question will be "what's going to happen when Wal-Mart becomes a Super Center next year?" and doubles its size. I see it becoming a direct competitor with all the grocery stores with the added bonus of not needing a membership like BJ's Wholesale.

I think Wal-Mart is just waiting for the permits to be approved, but it could be a done deal by now. You know how s-l-o-w county government works (or is that an oxymoron?).

I've worked for county government before and I have first-hand knowledge of their slowness.

I also built a house in St. Mary's recently and the permit process was excrutiatingly slow. :burning:
