On the way to drop my kids off this morning my son saw a small bus and said "Mommy look a short bus, Who rides on that?" How do you explain that?

Be honest......

About what?

Ok, Sorry if my many hours of entertainment from the forums conjured visions of children with helmets on being strapped to a seat. Yes I know that is bad.

Tell the child what you know to be fact about the short bus.

You can soften the language but don't lie to the child.

You should think the lord you have a child that is normal. But then again maybe you need to experience what those parent go through everyday. Its something you shouldn't make fun of.

I totally agree with you hence The I know I am Bad Comment I have to say that vision I had would have probably involved some of the folks here !!

Tigerlily, if your child seriously asked you this question and you were being serious with out to handle it, why would you feel the need to give any explanation other than it is a bus taking kids to school and as for why the bus is shorter than normal is because the driver has less kids that he is responsible for picking up. That is an honest answer and all that a kid would need to be told for that particular question.

Okay, I learned something today: that people refer to the "short bus" because that's what the handicapped kids ride to school. I thought it was just a figure of speech, not something based on anything.

What I really wonder is why the bus for special needs children is short. The difference in the bus itself leads people to question why the ridersare different. Would children themselves even notice if they all rode buses that were the same size?

So for all those that think I am wrong here. Are you saying it is ok to joke about people on here riding the short bus as long as they really don't need to?

The bus is short because:

1. there usually isn't a need for a lot of seats.
2. the children are in special seats of wheel chairs so they can be restrained
3. there is another person on the bus to help put the kids in the seats or lock them down

I just told him that some buses looked different than others. Then my daughter said "Yeah brother, Just like some buses are flat in the front and other have a hood"

I understand all of those points. I just couldn't figure a way to explain it without saying somehting I did not need to say.

Don't be silly, of course there is absolutely nothing right about short bus jokes... just as there is absolutely nothing right about any other kind of derogatory joke. Humor is usually at the expense of someone else. Look at all the nomo jokes. :ohwell:

I realized the connection from the beginning. But I was years out of school when I first heard the phrase, and I felt old and out of touch.

I've been seeing bumper stickers that say "I rode the SHORT BUS." At first I thought these were printed by a local rock band named Short Bus. But then I wondered if they were a Special Olympics-type statement of pride.

Hmmmm.....how about.........

Some children have special needs that a regular bus doesn't offer. Since these children can't ride a regular bus to get their education, the state provides the shorter bus so that they have a chance to lead as a productive life as possible.
