Should driving while texting be a crime?

Sending and receiving text messages has joined talking on a cell phone as a dangerous distraction for drivers. State legislators are taking notice.

text me

text me

I'm all for it.

This past weekend I saw a goober texting as I passed him (erratic driving) and then somebody else who pulled suddenly onto the shoulder and was on the cell phone. For the last one, sure, he pulled over, but he did so unsafely.

I won't even mention the number that I saw gabbing away as driving.

This to me is more important than seat belt laws. If somebody doesn't buckle up they can fly out of their windshield and splatter their brain matter to eternity (idiots) However, when somebody is chatting or texting away they are threatening me and my loved ones.

Did you write the number down that you saw while he/she was gabbing away

Talking on the cell slow's you down. Old saying, "can you rub your belly and chew bubble gum at the same time"?
Can you "drive and talk on the celly at the same time"? Muchless "text". :jameo:

I dunno about everyone else, but I pay more attention when I am on the phone...maybe because I don't want to die or kill anyone. But when I'm not on the phone I tend to zone out.

I don't want to be on any road that you might be driving on. You scare me with your combined driving and phone usage and "zoning out" ways.

Most people who drive should ALWAYS paying attention, not just when it is convenient for them.

I think it is retarded, you already have reckless driving on the books as a crime, why split hairs? If you're driving erratic, who cares if it's from texting, putting on make-up, reading the paper...

No, and they were not going slowly. I just wanted to get away from them.

:yeahthat: Maybe he/she doesn't wear their seatbelt and will be off the road sooner rather than later.

The phone usage and texting has upped the number of erratic drivers.

Whether putting on makeup, or whatever else, I don't want to be anywhere near the offenders.

Well who does? My point is that it is redundant to create another law that is already covered by one already in existence.

Not all people drive erratically (all of the time) while on the phone, putting on makeup, etc, but if they pass this law users of cell phones and "crackberries" while driving will be cited. That would cut down on the number of erratic drivers.

Easily half of the people I glanced at while on my roadtrip this weekend had a phone pressed to their ear while driving.

University of Utah study shows that use of cell phones while driving is
at least, just as bad as drunk driving (including hands-free devices).
It is not the device that is distracting, but the conversation itself !

University of Utah?? P-shaw!!

The real authority had proven this years ago. without doubt talking on a cell phone was more dangerous than drunk driving.

They gave their subjects menial mental tasks to do while talking on a cell phone while driving through an obstacle course, then they got them drunk and had them drive the same course. THe results were ASTOUNDING.. Cell Phony Yakkers won, or would that be lost?

Mythbusters, proving myths before they are cool, or even myths!!
