I started working at 13 slinging plates at a diner that my friend's family owned. I either worked and went to school (high school then college) or worked two jobs. Even as a professional, I would often work a light extra job to earn cash towards holidays or what have you.

I will say, though, there are kids that are in accelerated programs that have too much work during the week and potentially an event or game on the weekend, that I would shun from taking a job until perhaps summers or breaks.

I definitely don't think kids should miss out on being a kid, but having a job is really important for learning responsibility and self reliance.

I agree that teens should work. However, I have always taught my daughter(now 12) and teaching boy(now 7) how to manage money. They have 3 containers each. One for savings, investing and spending. Out of thier weekly allowance they have to put money in all three. Since my daughter was 10 she would get 50 dollars on her birhtday them she picks 3 stocks that she is interested in and she watches them till her next birthday. On her birthday, she gets what she has made. Last year she made $205. Their spending money is for the toys, and what I call being cool stuff. Occasionally, both my kids will splurge in stuff just because.

I worked odd jobs during the school year since I was about 13 and worked secretarial-style in an office for a friend of my parents when I was about 14 to 15, and then I started summer internships sophomore, junior, and senior year. Some of my friends thought working jobs would interfere with their schoolwork, but then they wouldn't go and get jobs in the summer either, which didn't make sense to me. I always had a really challenging courseload but I worked in the summer. Just get a job like an internship that has to do with academic stuff!

Of course teens should work. Like somebody above said, I'll never forget the first time I went to the mall with my paycheck in ninth grade - came home empty-handed because I couldn't bear to part with my hard-earned cash just for an overpriced shirt or something. :lmao:
