Right. An appeals system can be a good thing. (Not in this instance, obviously.) But allowing them to drag on for months or years, and one appeal after the next is absurd. The criminal may die naturally waiting for his execution.

Hadn't quite pictured that in my mind, but if you give it some thought, for a moment, you realise what these - savoirs - (as good a word I can think of right now), what these folks have come across in these kinds of situations.

More than a few sleepless nights, I would imagine.
