Sick Boxer Baby

Before we start, YES, we went to the E.R. at about 3 a.m.... I'm looking for advice or anyone who maybe has gone through this.

My 3 year old boxer girl Molly started hacking/coughing like MAD at about 11:00 p.m., and by coughing it was SO HARD it was like she was trying to make herself vomit...which is exactly what I thought she was doing. Now, she's settled and not doing it so much... when she coughs, it's like she's going to hack up a lung. She is completely fine otherwise, her vitals are normal, she is eating/drinking just fine. She has a normal vet and has all her vaccinations. I've already been chatting with Katt, in case anyone is wondering... I just wanted to know if anyone has had anything like this happen to them and I'm trying to NOT think it's heart disease :-(

It is likely it is either she got hair or dust mite in her throat and cannot get it up. Trying tearing the crust off a piece of bread and then roll the bread into a ball and let her eat it, this would clear it out.

hope your fur baby is ok. What did they say at the vet? That's a good idea to eliminate the rawhide and chewies (if you even give her these). I like the bread idea too.

Good Morning all, we kept her inside and limited her activity yesterday and are still. Because of her breed, the vet at the E.R. wanted to run a zillion tests and gave us a $1200.00 estimate and we declined them, not going to spend that amount till her normal vet says that is what is necessary. I understand they are just doing their job, but some of the tests were not called for and unnecessary, they had already said her heart wasn't in distress and they thought it was something like a stick she may have eaten. THAT being said, she still is coughing. Not nearly as frequently, she woke us up 2 times last night, which is a HUGE improvement over the night before. I'm going to wait to hear back from her normal vet and keep her inside today. Thanks again for any other feedback !!!

It does sound like something was stuck in her throat. I sounds like she is getting better. I took one of my girls to the 24 hour clinic a year ago, and man, are they ever expensive. I'm not saying that our animals aren't worth it, but they came up with this ungodly amount that we would have had to give them upfront. I declined, and took her home to observe her. Luckily, she was fine. As said above, keep us posted.

That's exactly what we are doing. She still has the hacking cough like she's trying to vomit, but nothing comes out. It seems to be worse when she gets excited so we are keeping he both dogs inside today. Thanks again.

Sorry to hear about your four-legged baby, hope she is doing better today. Have you heard from your regular vet yet? Praying everything is okay with her.
