I guess it is good that I am still stuck at work and did not have to worry about getting around any of that.

Double Dose of Deathwalks

LEXINGTON PARK --- Woman struck by vehicle on Great Mills Road in front of Canopy Liquors, man struck on Chancellors Run Road, both on Friday night, the man died, the woman was flown from Lexington Park to a trauma unit in critical condition, but Cpl. Gene Hill doesn't have a final word on the dead pedestrian or the current condition of the Great Mills Road victim, neither of which were crossing the road at a crosswalk, making the pedestrian in the wrong....it is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor, but in pedestrian fatalities, it often is....within a mile of the Great Mills Road incident, there have been at least a dozen other pedestrians struck with most of them ending in fatalities. The roadway along Great Mills Road continues to have 1950's style street lighting which hardly passes for proper lighting while the St. Mary's Commissioners brag about how much they have done to support the Navy and keep the base safe during BRAC years. Keeping drunks out of the road requires some effort on the part of the drunks, keeping the roads well lit requires some effort on the part of the commissioners as Lexington Park is not incorporated. Great Mills Road continues to be Mean Street...dark and dangerous....while private business is spending millions redeveloping the commercial strip, the county fathers sit on their duffs....the sidewalks look like they were designed by an undertaker, as traffic whizzes by at 40 plus only inches away from pedestrians....one man was killed several years ago in front of Wendy's when he was hit in the head by the side mirror of a truck while he was walking on the sidewalk...other people have gotten drunk and crossed the highway, in the dark, wearing dark clothes and ran in front of cars....Darwin was right......

I've ran the red light on GMR @ CVS. Even though it has been there forever, it just doesn't stand out. Unless I'm looking for it, I don't see it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here. Where are the crosswalks on Chancellor's Run Rd exactly? I know of the ones by GMR, 235 and outside of Westbury (maybe). Are there any others and if dude was closer to either of the main intersections then I can see their point. Otherwise how can you expect anyone to use the crosswalk if those are the only real two?

I do recall that before I moved here and I was getting all of the schooling information I found out I had to contact DOT to find out about bus routes because the county doesn't allow the children to walk due to lack of sidewalks. I agree that the entire GMR strip needs new side walks but that has to be costly. So what can you really expect...

At 7 PM, I can expect the pedestrian to look for headlights before crossing. Since death is the consequence, I think it is worth his while.

St. Mary's Today got the facts wrong. That's what I was quoting. Sorry if you thought I was calling you wrong, but I was posting at the same time as you were.

Perhaps but I get that they are making it to be a "if they had only used the crosswalk..." thing. While the crosswalk certainly will help as will paying attention before crossing, if there are no sidewalks or crosswalks what can be expected. Maybe Chancellor's Run is suppose to be like the highway preferrably uncrossable.

But, I know that some people have a time checking their mail. The box is on the opposite side of the street (to accomodate the postman in the safety of his vehicle).

If you are talking about the St. Mary's Today article, don't bother. He's full of crap, and trying to stir up sh!t. He's the first one to criticize the lack of crosswalks and lighting, and the first to whine if the county or the state try to do anything about it. It sells papers, and that's all that matters to him.

Man, is nothing sacred from these rag-writers. We are such a small part of the county, yet these reporters are prepared to take on Washington and Tinseltowne with their chest poking pencils. :jameo:

No, nothing is sacred to Rossignol, other than the all mighty dollar.

Maybe there was 3 people killed crossing the roads last night. 1 female by A & E, 1 male on chancellors run rd and 1 female later on chancellors run rd. It could be possible. Can you believe his son is a State Trooper.

My friend was the driver of one of the accidents this weekend. He was not drinking, and he said that he was driving along and next thing he knew something hit his windshield. The woman he hit was wearing all black and he said he never saw her until she actually hit him. He was obviously very shaken up. After they gave him a field sobriety test and he passed, he stayed for about 3 hours to give a full account of what happened. My question is though, if you're walking at night, why wouldn't you move out of the way when you see headlights coming? I wonder if she was on something.
