Skull Mexican Restaurant....NEW Management

The lady friend and I went to Skull Restaurant (In Prince Frederick, next to Ledos) over the weekend. I've heard horror stories about the place since it opened, so we never went until now.

Recently, we've heard great things about the food now that it's under new management. We gave it a shot, and we were pleasantly surprised.

We shared the guacamole appetizer, which came in a flour tortilla bowl, and flour tortilla chips. We loved it, but it could have been a bit bigger portion.

She got the seafood soup, and seafood paella (paella de marisco), both were delicious, minus the overcooked mussels.

I got the Burrito al Carbon, overstuffed burrito with steak, refried beans, rice, and trimmings (lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo). Also delicious.

The food was moderately priced. Not as cheap as, say, Mexico in Huntingtown, but the small bump in price was well worth it.

We spoke to the owner for a good while, and come to find out, his cousin owns Las Placitas in Capital Hill, and they both attended the same cooking school. My girlfriend and I have eaten at Las Placitas, and I HIGHLY recommend going there if you get a chance.

Cliff Notes: If you're in the Prince Frederick area, and want some dynamite latin food, check out Skull Restaurant.

Having been one of those with a bad experience st Skull & based on your mediocre review, I wouldn't be in a hurry to try them again.

Frankly, I love the amount of food for the price, the quality of the food, the fast & friendly service - not to mention the quality & size of the margaritas at LA TOLTECA that I'd be unwilling to even give Skull a try. Plus I know the owners of LT, and since I have such great experiences there, I continue to give them my business.

I certainly wasn't criticizing your writing abilities. I just thought you gave Skull a mediocre review.

I wasn't taking it the wrong way...I may love something, that others don't.

From my experience, I'll be going to Skull from now on, and I live walking distance from Mexico.

Dia de los muertos :buddies:

Yea, even the owner said the name is a turn off for most people, but it was named that before he took over.

The exact opposite of my (multiple) experiences at La Tolteca... :barf:

I will not eat at a placed named SKULL. If that is the name that they chose to represent their restaurant, I would hate to see what they are actually putting in the food!

If he knows that the name is a turn off, you would think that would be enough of a reason to change the name.

i have found Mexico in Huntingtown and La Tolteca to be horrible mexican food. I have been to both on several occasions and will not go back. However, I have not been to Skull but based on your recommendation, I will give it a try.

By that reasoning, you wouldn't go to Scalped Salon and Spa? It's arguably one of the best salons in Calvert County, but it's named Scalped, so you wouldn't go?

I'm no real estate lawyer, but maybe part of the purchasing agreement had something to do with the name.

I believe the Skull name came from skulls being a big deal in Mexico. Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a national holiday where Mexican families honor their dead with offerings. Sugar skulls, tons of food, etc.

Why not call it cráneo instead then (spanish translation for skull), that way the people that know the tradition will see it's still respected, and the rest won't be put off by the name.

just my 2 cents, I know you're not in charge of naming.
