Smeco: Check your bill!!!

Was I suprised.....the other day I opened my SMECO bill and was shocked that I was charged 3 times what my average July-August bill was for the past few years. Yeah, I know its been hot and the a/c has been on ovetime, but NOT 3 times more. So I called the billing phone number. A young man asked the normal questions as in a new appliance etc... I said no.
Well, as promised they "re-read" our meter and SHAZAAAAAMMMM "a "mistaken reading" was to blame.

But there's more......seems that a few neighbors had "mistaken readings" too.

Those steel power poles must be expensive.

CHECK YOU BILLS FOLKS, ESPECIALLY IN 20639 VICINITY!!

Was the meter reader dyslexic?

I hate getting their crappy little letters each month saying I use more energy than my neighbors.

No ####! I'm surrounded my empty houses (for sale) and weekend homes. What a waste of money to send me that crap each month.

I got one, said we ranked 97 out of 100. I have set a goal to become number 100 now. :yahoo:

We get those too. I don't even open them anymore. Of course our use is higher than our neighbors. Our house is bigger!! Duh! We had a HUGE bill in June. I went ahead and paid it because it was around the time our grandaughter was born and I thought washing and drying all of the baby stuff might have pushed the bill up. Then I got July's bill, and it was two thirds less than June's. So, it was obviously a misread of the meter.

Got four neighbors, we use the most. Three of them are older couples living by themselves, ones a widow by herself. We have two teens and this summer regular guests, of course we are using the most on the street:)

Ours was very high this month also. No new appliances, no extra use of anything- seeing as how nobody actually reads meters, they just "estimate", i'd sure like to know what they base their estimates on, because my average is half of what they billed me for August

My bill seemed very high this month too. Could be a large SMECO billing issue?
Everyone with a high bill this month should call and request an actual reading or re-read of their meter.

I don't trust smeco at all. When I use to work from I would always go out with the meter guy and write down the number of the meter as well as taking a picture of it. More then once have I taken the picture over and been like wtf! How did you get this number when I have a picture timed and date stamped....

They use an out of town company (SCOPE) to ride around in junky little pu trucks and read them electronically from the truck. In my neck of the woods anyway. I do not know if they get a reading on their handheld device and then write it down or what. Maybe they write the readings down wrong.

Let me add myself to the list that is recieving the monthly letter rating me as an "above average user" for my community.

okay, it's not a scienentific study but doesn't seem like everybody is getting the same letter, the same, "you're an energy hog" letter?

Meters: Old vs New

To those that are receiving questionable bills; do you have the new digital meter or the analog meter with all the little dials; that I learned are read from right to left; and rounded up if the dial is between numbers?

Ehhh.....that's not what I was told. Maybe the teller was full of it. IDK

They always round down, they'll make it up in the long run; I take readings on a military installation and we read right to left and round down, if not you could really have big swings in the KWH used

I would think you round down, due to not reaching the next whole number yet.
