Smeco?

It depends on when they read the meter.
When they get it automated it will probably always be the same.

Might have something to do with when the bills are sent out, since the meter reading is only a sometimes thing. I doubt they send bills out on the weekend.

Question: is it better to keep the thermostat set at one temperate all the time (say 74 degrees) vice keeping it warmer during the day when no one is home (say 78 degrees) and cooler in the evening/when people are home? Which saves more money?

Yes...If no one is home set it up a few degrees. It will save you money and the people who are not there will never know.

How does that save money? Ultimately the system has to work longer (staying on) to efficiently cool the house to the lower temp. Wouldn't that be more energy/money? I have no idea if I'm right or wrong, just curious.

It could go either way. If you have a well insulated house and a cooling system that can quickly cool down a few degrees, yes, set it higher during the day.

In my case, I have a poorly insulated house and an undersized a/c unit. If I set the thermostat higher during the day, it never catches up in the evening. I have to set it to one temp so it can stay ahead of the heat.

I agree. We tried keeping it warmer while at work and then dropping it when we got home and vice versa for winter time. Found the system had/has to work harder to cool down/heat up to the desired temp.

No matter what I do I cant get my bill lower than $300 a month. :cds:

So those that are on Smeco's Cool Sentry program who have a poorly insulated house could be losing money. Interesting...

Do you close curtains/blinds during the day? Is your house drafty? I've got a fairly large house (about 3400 sq ft if you include the basement that is an ice box ) and my bill is very, very reasonable.

During the day, keep the shades/drapes closed. If you have ceiling fans, use them, but make sure they are pulling the hot air UP; and set the stat at about 75-76 deg.

After the sun sets; and it goes down to a "chilly" 80 degrees at night; set the stat at about 72-73.

Mine jumped from $85 to $285 because of the a/c... :ohwell: Good thing it's only a couple of months.

Yeah we have that bad boy dark like a dungeon  We have a smaller system so it already has to work extra hard to cool down/heat up the house.

I long for the days when my electric bill was only $300.

73 degrees in Casa de Pete, just got the bill $174
Hell, we have the loft thermostat set at 95, which means that we don't even bother using that space during the summer months when it is so damn hot.

The main level of the house is at 82-85, and on those rare occassions when we get tired of the high temps, we lower it all the way to 77-78.

The basement temp feels wonderful.

I'm thinking that I need to have roving bedrooms. Sleep in the loft in the winter, and sleep in the basement in the summer.

Last month's bill was $347, which really wasn't that bad.

I dread receiving this latest electric bill. No telling how bad that one will be.

My highest electric bill (Jan 2011) was $627.
