Snout soother

My dog has a very crusty nose and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this snout soother. She hasn't been to the vets about it but will be going tomorrow. I feel so sorry for her and her old crusty nose. In the meantime, I've been putting vasoline on it. If vasoline is okay, I just may continue to put that on until I take her to the vets. Any comments?

I wonder if something like Neosporin would be beneficial?

My concern would be that vaseline, being petroleum based, is probably not your healthiest alternative. I'd try bag-balm if it seems to be mainly a "keep it soft and hydrated" issue.

I was thinking of that too and couldn't remember the name. That stuff comes in handy in many different ways for people and critters.

vaseline is not bad.... I feed it to my dogs if they ate something I fear may block them  so a little on the nose will not hurt... they cant process it so it acts as a laxitive and helps move things thru the intestines :yay:

what do you think the base of Bag Balm is? (I use this also on cuts and open wounds on the dogs... they do like the taste of it)

So would Vaseline act differently than mineral oil? I've known people to give cats mineral oil when they have hair balls.

On the good stuff it's bees wax and lanoline. But for cheapos like you I guess it's used motor oil.

The active ingredients of Bag Balm are 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate 0.3% (antiseptic) in a petroleum jelly and lanolin base.[2]

motor oil :faint: (had a case like that a month ago)

I don't see anything wrong with the vasoline sparingly and rubbing it in a bit, but if you don't see improvement I would get to the vet. Some nose cancers can look like this as well.

Dipping in used motor oil is an old school treatment for Mange, so don't laugh, people still do it.

It works too.

If it doesn't kill the dog.

have those who use it to treat for fleas and wounds

People like to use alternatives to the usually pricier, newer remedies BUT sometimes the alternatives don't work, don't work as well, or can be bad to use. I wouldn't think that a little used motor oil would hurt BUT used motor oil is controlled because it's a known carcinogen.

They DIP in it. The dog only needs to aspirate or ingest a small amount and it can be :dead:
