Nikon D40.. I set the ISO and the white balance.. don't know where the exposure is

Look for the button that looks like this..

Press the button and turn one of the command dials (i dont know which it is on a D40) while holding the button down.

That button will let you control the Exposure + and - in Manual, Shutter Priorty, and Aperture Pri.
