Little late replying but here is a video of it.

Maybe it's because I don't know anything about wood lathes, but it sure looks like he could've split that big honking block into 4 equal blanks and still got 4 of the same sized handles out of it.

Isn't anise about the same as BL?
Not really. Just taste similar.

Main ingredients of licorice: Extract of the roots of the liquorice plant, sugar, binding agent (starch, flour, gum arabic, or gelatin)

Anise, also called aniseed or rarely anix is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to Eurasia. The flavor and aroma of its seeds have similarities with some other spices and herbs, such as star anise, fennel, licorice, and tarragon

Pfeffernusse is a small mound of licorice flavored cookie covered in powdered sugar. Some are very soft, some hard as a rock.

I have loved pfeffernusse since childhood, my grandmother use to make them every Christmas. I dont remember any licorice in them just some cookie mix and the white power. Couple years back when Aldi opened in Brandywine and I saw them in the store and I just about bought them all up. On another note folks who use to like High's eggnog, the eggnog at Aldi's is pretty damn close to same flavor, can't get enough of that either.

I think the more shavings you make the better it is.
After I posted that, I thought that it may be to use the heart of the wood. There's probably a good reason. I'm definitely not a wood worker. I did cut a dead oak tree down today that's been threatening to fall on my cars.
