Hmmmm. Good thought. I suppose that's possible. HOWEVER. He would have had to:
Remove my purse from the hook in my closed bedroom where it's kept. Unzip it and remove my keychain where the key is kept w/o me OR SO noticing.
Unlock and open the closet door w/his puppy paws. Reach the two highest shelves that are at least three feet higher than his head would be IF he were standing on his hind legs.
Remove all poisons, have his party, place all items back properly, lock the door back up.
Replace the keys in my purse and rehang the purse in its proper location.
All while SO and I are in the house with him-watching TV-close to midnight.
You're right-that's probably what happened. Take away my right to own animals now, please. I just ignore my animals and don't pay any attention to what they are doing.

You're welcome. You said the poisons are locked up. Is it possible he watched you hide the key and when you weren't home, grabbed it and had a party?

For future instances (hopefully there aren't any), you can give activated charcoal. It binds toxins and is great to give in cases like this when you're not sure what happened. You can buy capsules from the pharmacy or you can buy it in gel or paste form from livestock catalogs. It's great to keep on hand!

:yay:

Or, if it's something like a mushroom and you saw them eat it, a couple of teaspoons of peroxide....and let them out. :barf:

German Shepherd...that's what I was thinking, too. I checked him carefully for bites and sting marks. I couldn't find any, but I know that some spider bites are not visible. I mentioned spiders in my OP. The Benedryl I gave him made most of the swelling go away, but he was still pawing at his face and whining.
Thanks for the tip!

What kind of dog do you have? Our boxer got bit by a spider while on our deck and had the same symptoms. We took him to the vet and had him checked out and they gave him some medicine and he too stayed splotchy (sp?) on his face for a few days. It has only happened that one time thankfully and was an easy fix. I would venture to say he may of been bitten by a spider. Not sure how to make sure it doesnt happen again. We just check our deck to make sure there are no spider webs or spiders hanging around when we let him out there.
Our other boxer boy liked to chase and torment frogs (really he just wanted to sniff them and play with them) and after the first time he actually got really close to one of them his face became very red and a little swollen but it went down in a few hours.

I don't know for sure what it was. The vet said that they THOUGHT it was an ingestion of a toxin. We took samples of his puke and diarrhea in with us and they ran tests, they couldn't find anything positive.

So it was definitely ingestion and not a sting? Sounds a lot like a ground bee sting.

If ingested, I'm voting for the mushrooms.

Thank you! I will do this also just in case. Like I said in an earlier comment, I am so afraid it will happen again.
I will check daily for mushrooms and spiderwebs and make sure I have some of these activated charcoal capsules on hand. We also always keep hydrogen peroxide handy, so that's an option, too.
Thank you everyone, for your suggestions and help. And you, too, Baja, for assisting with my grammatical errors.

You know, it could have been a snake bite. Not sure if they've all gone into hiding. Our female Boxer gets into/after EVERYTHING. A few years ago, she had awful swelling on her face, particularly her eyes. Vet wasn't positive, but we treated her as if it was a snake bite. She did have two little tiny wounds that weren't really visible until the swelling subsided. My older male Boxer came in the other night with his eyes slightly swollen and you could tell they itched...no clue..but a few doses of Benedryl cleared him up .

It could have been, but I think he would have yelped or something if he had been bitten by a snake. Like I said, we are right there within eye/ear shot of him when he is outside. It's driving me nuts!
