Yes, they are megaplex's. The problem is the owners of those tracks have done little to improve the racing on the track. No you said "the bigger tracks cost a lot more to maintain" and I countered and said there have been large tracks since the dawn of the modern era of NASCAR so that is false.
Now, those tracks you mention are not just "tracks" but "megaplex's" with luxury boxes and suites and numerous VIP areas, food courts, and so on and that does cost more. If they didn't build those places to be cathedrals to NASCAR, NASCAR would not have given the heave-ho to South Wilksboro, Nashville, and Darlington and moved races to them.
So see, NASCAR in a round about way is causing its own wane of popularity.
Don't even get me started on the weeper issue at California. That should never happen, at that extreme, on a track where tickets cost hundreds of dollars a piece. Then the owner of Auto Club Speedway of SoCal says the track is fine. Puhhh-leaze.
Brian France needs to grow a set and say, "You're track sucks. You have the lowest rated races, the fans hate the races, and you can't even fill half of your grandstands when you're in the second largest market. We're moving the August date back to Darlington."
But, that'll never happen.
EVERYBODY's criticized the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California, and they have for years. But, NASCAR still gives them two dates. And, I agree with you on that - Brian France is causing a lot of the problems.
BTW - it wasn't NASCAR that took the North Wilkesboro races away. Bob Bahre, in a partnership with Bruton Smith, was the grand architect of that one.
