OK, so i'm reading the St, Mary's Today internet news and noted a report of a teen killed in Huntingtown involving alcohol. With respect to this tragedy, what got my attention is the story is injected with commentary from the editor. I not only disagree with the comment but believe its inappropriate in this format. If editors what to make comments or opinions on stories they should do so in the editorial or opinion page. What say you...?

Speed was also a factor, giving this Saturday night booze cruise a footnote in the history of the Southern Maryland drivers who really don't care about anyone but themselves

I think it's VERY accurate and and quite appropriate. Too many innocent lives are taken when selfish SOB's get behind the wheel when drunk.

Yeah, but please - it's St Mary's Today, one of the sorriest excuses for a newspaper I've seen in my life, and I've seen all kinds.

I don't see anything wrong with what was said, matter of fact it seems kind of tame considereing the details.

A drunk TEENAGER kills a passenger in his car, and we can't talk bad about it??

Bull####.. Moron should rot in jail... Take him out once a year to parade him around the local high schools.. "See kids, you drink and drive and kill your best friend this could be you!!" Then throw him back into his little love nest with 350 lb Bubba, so while Bubba is making him his wife he can think of all the mistakes he made that night..

Its obvious this paper wants to come accross as a Tabloid but I only make the observation that news outlets have a "report the the facts" and save the commentary for elseware. This news organization seems to want hide behind its stories story while at the same time injecting "opinion". Agree or disagree the point is comments like these only serve to distract from the facts of the story.

That's why you don't go there for facts.

As a matter of fact I would love to know the reporters name so I or anyone else can ask him or her questions as to why I am a "dont care" SOMD SOB driver. But alas I cannot since they seem to conveniently omit the reports name. Pity since they would likely get an ear full if they had the balls to make these type rash across the board on a commentary format.

Since when does the media care about facts? They all do what he does- slant things, show bias, express opinion- the difference is, he's blunt about it.

So, the "fact based" news is all you want? BS. If the stories were told more often like this with the apparently necessary "lesson learned", maybe folks will start to "get it". Telling stories in a way to not offend or upset those that may have known the "victim" is candy ass reporting. The dude that was driving will be paying for this for the rest of his life, as will the passenger that survived. Both driver and passenger will be having nightmares, and question the reason that they were allowed to live, and their friend died. It is a haunting, recurring nighmare. The family of the victim on the other hand never get to see their son alive ever again. 17 years is all they got.

Tell me where the story author/editor went wrong?

Blunt is fine but stand up to your opinion intead of drive by comments in a news story. Again, they seem to neglect to add names to their reports. I wonder why?

How do you propose that he do that? Talk about it on a public forum?

I don't take this as meaning ALL of the drivers in SOMD.. only the stupid ones, yaano, 'the ones that don't care about anyone but themselves'. Granted it's a sizable group but I don't think it's all inclusive.

I don't take it as insulting to us SOMD'rs but he's pointing out the idiots the rest of us share the road with.

I'm finally getting your point I think. You are insulted by the statement "the Southern Maryland drivers who really don't care about anyone but themselves" because you think he is saying that ALL Southern Maryland drivers don't care. While the sentence is poorly written (like most of their stories), you are reading outrage into a benign sentence. He is talking about drivers who don't care, not all drivers.

I have to wonder, though, why you would look to that rag for fair or accurate reporting. It is the local dirty secret. Everyone pretends in public that they don't read it, but then they sneak a peek in private so they can get the gossip about their neighbors. They thrive on gossip and sensationalism. Don't be so shocked when they give it to you.

He makes a valid point. There's something wrong, when my insurance rates GO UP when moving to SOMD, and back down again when I moved back to South PHILADELPHIA! The accident rate is through the roof in SOMD. Ignorance is at an all time high in the area, or so it seems. Does THAT statement involve EVERYONE in SOMD? Yes. Does it mean that EVERYONE in SOMD is ignorant? No.
