Can't tell you what the proper name is, but they are native to this area. I've seen several around my place, inlcuding having one come into my house for a visit.

Cool, I thought it was a snake when I first saw it. I was digging under some pine trees and thought I chopped a snake in half.

Can't believe I never seen one before.

OF COARSE, not to be confused with a 'red-tailed skank' !!

Oh I have seen plenty of Skanks arround here. Many can be seen on Great Mills Road.

We used to call them "glassy tails" when I was a kid. Their tails break off and will grow back. They apparently do pretty well in captivity.

yup ! blue tailed skink ! dem little suckers are FAST too !

Very fast! I see them every summer on my concrete steps and around the foundation of my house but have never been able to catch one. My cats must be trying as well because I do notice that sometimes they only have half a tail, good thing their tails grow back! They are a beautiful blue/green color. I never thought to keep them in captivity, I just wanted to get a closer look.

I saw one this year for the first time also! What purpose do they serve? Do they eat bugs or what? Are they a good thing to have around?

Good question.

"Skinks in the wild eat anything that walks or flies by as long as they can fit it into their mouths. Avoid caterpillars, spiders, wasps and bees. Somehow in the wild they avoid the poisonous ones..."

That might explain why the skinks tend to hang around my flowerbed. I'm guessing they don't eat the Japenese beatles considering how those buggars tend to devour my holley hocks and roses every year. :frown:

I just rescued one from my cat. Had it trapped under a plant. First one I've seen at my house. His tail was in the process of growing back.

I see a lot of them on my lumber pile. I think they like the wood for some reason (though, unfortunately, so do snakes).

Anyway, they're pretty common. You'll probably see more in the same area where you found that one (or the same guy just hanging around).

Now, where are all the frogs? I never see wild frogs anymore...

Come on over to my house - some frog(s) just had a gazillion tadpoles and they are living in my koi pond. When they mature, they will jump out and swim in my pool, eventually landing in my skimmer baskets which I have to empty daily with 8-10 frogs in them.

Yuck!
