Something is wrong with the pug

OK so my pug is pretty lazy so it is not unlike he just to look at me when I saw time to get up. But he was really trying but couldn't. Even when I dangled a treat in front of him. Then I gave it to him and he did not eat it. He was also lying on the floor which also is not unlike him as sometimes he gets out of bed to lie closer to the fan.

I felt all his legs/paws and nothing feels broken or anything nor did he yipe when I did it. A sprain maybe? He does have little legs on this overweight sausage body (we describe him as a sausage on toothpicks).

And today is the worse possible day as well as i know my parents cannot watch my kids today and my husband is in mandatory training today and he was already there by the time we got up. I know I cannot handle a 3 year old, a 18 month old, and an injured pug by myself at the vet. But he will be home earlier than usual so hopefully if puggy is not feeling better by then I can take him in.

If you can get your kids in the car, then why cant you go back in , grab the dog and go. Why is it so hard because of the dog. Dont you ever go out with you and the 2 kids? Toss the dog in the backseat and roll. How would you get a sick kid to the doctor? I m sorry, I just dont see how the dog is that much trouble. Get him to a doctor if hes sick.

It is not the getting in the car that is the issue. It is the once we get there getting in the vets office from the parking lot and then waiting to be seen. My kids doctor is different as the waiting room is full of other very playful kids and is childproofed unlike my vets office.

I may look into the mobile vet option though. I did not think about that.

I just called his vet and they cannot see him today anyway because they are short staffed.

Is there a possibility of him having a tick recently?

If so, sometimes ticks can cause temporary paralysis. The vet will definitely have to look at him though. If not that, then is there a time he could have fallen and you didn't know it? He may have a spinal injury. I would say find a vet that can see him today. My vet would take him in a heartbeat. I use St. Mary's Vet's. Good Luck, hope he is better soon.

sorry to hear about your pug.. i too have a pug, and i was going to suggest perhaps he pulled something in one of his back legs, but is he walking at all or just laying there and won't move...if it is just hard for him to get up and he is limping i would say let him lounge around until hubby gets home, but if he is not mobile at all i would definately get him to a vet asap...i use all kinds in callaway they are great with my pug, a little far to drive, but i love them there

UPDATE: The vet office ended up telling me to drop him off and he would be seen sometime today and that I should call back around 4. I guess I misunderstood them saying they could not get him in for an appointment with them not being able to see him at all. Normally I do not like to drop them off all day but with not having a sitter and him refusing to eat (SO not like him) I really think he needed to be seen today.

Yes I just the other day pulled a tick off right under his ear. I use K9 Advantix on both dogs but they still get a few ticks every summer.

I myself use all kinds and they are good with the animals but they are also really expensive too in my books.

UPDATE #2
Well the vet called. and we are home from the with the pug. Both bloodwork and x rays were all normal but he has lost function on his right side that may or may not get better. We are not really going to know anything for a week or two. They are thinking he may have had Fibrocartilaginous Embolism (FCE)

They have him on steriods for about 2 weeks and right now we just have to wait and see what happens.

I drove him up to Delaware to meet my FIL who drove him to the vet he uses in NYC. They put him under general anesthesia and gave him an MRI and a spinal tap. Several thousand dollars later (we will not know the final bill until FIL picks him up tomorrow but the high estimate was $4,000 ) he has a slipped disc that is causing a pinched nerve in a vertebrae in his neck.

He has to lose weight and will be crated for at least 4 weeks but he should make a full recovery!!

We are home and luckily it ended up being about $1600 when all was said and done. Like I said the $4,000 was the high estimate had it been the most serious of the possible four diagnoses and he would have needed surgery.
We would have paid the $4,000 (bye-bye vacation, well that anyway since I will not kennel an injured dog) but I must say we are VERY happy it was significantly less.
Luckily all he needs is rest (crated for at least 4-6 weeks) and to loose about 8lbs, which is a lot for a pug.
