"As the British terror plot was unfolding, the Bush administration quietly tried to take away $6 million that was supposed to be spent this year developing new explosives detection technology."

Nothing to see here...move along.

Maybe Bush had forgotten we were in a war against terror?

Something to think about as Cheney and the other fear mongers ramp up their "vote Republican or we will all die" campaign.

Well, it makes sense, since they are now not carrying explosives... Seems to me if we are trying to detect something that they aren't using, it would be a waste of money.

Smart Americans those republicans are always trying to stay one step ahead of the terrorists..

but it figures.. the current administration stops a terror plot that would have killed THOUSANDS of Americans, and someone has to find something they DIDN'T do that would have had no effect.

U.S. slow to test new technology
The administration also was slow to start testing a new liquid explosives detector that the Japanese government provided to the United States earlier this year.

The British plot to blow up as many as 10 American airlines on trans-Atlantic flights would have involved liquid explosives.

Hawley said Homeland Security is now going to test the detector in six American airports. “It is very promising technology, and we are extremely interested in it to help us operationally in the next several years,” he said.

This is bull####, and tells you how ignorant they truly are.. a liquid exposives detector wouldn't have helped, as the chemicals they would have carried onto the plane would have been harmless, and NOT explosive. You could even drink the chemicals they were planning on using. Anotherr crappy attempt by the liberal media to make Americans feel unsafe with a UNTRUE story!

But please, try again.

Hell, a dog can sniff out anything you teach him to sniff out. No need to spend $6 million on a dog.

I believe the Brits are responsible for the large majority of the work involved in breaking up this plot.

Oh, and thank you for informing me that we no longer have to worry about terrorists using explosives against us. I know I feel much better. You should hold a press conference, and inform the rest of the world, as well. I don't want to be the only one who sleeps easier at night. :yay:

See, that's the thing that gets me. They want to spend money on crap like this to supposedly "prevent" bombings - why not put that money into stopping terrorism at its root by going after terrorist organizations and killing their asses?

What he's saying, dippy, is that the current explosives detectors we have at airports will find traditional explosives just fine. However, now terrorists are using routine objects/substances that are harmless alone, but can be combined to create an explosive.

Read it and weep, brother.

I'm sorry that you aren't too bright.. We already have explosive detectors in airports, and the terrorists APPARENTLY know this.

Oh, you mean the British that aren't hamstrung by the ACLU and the liberal .. "Don't violate their rights!!" crowd?? Yeah you are right, if it was this country some lawyer would already have them out on the streets, and given them back their bomb making materials becasue we violeted their rights.. They didn't break any laws, it's not illegal to carry these three chemicals onto a plane.. so what if they MIGHT have made a bomb, they havent yet, so they haevn't broken any laws yet.. you have to let them go, then AFTER they blow up the planes you can arrest them.

THANK GOD (you can pick which one) Bush is our president during these times..

So I have you all on record as being opposed to new explosives detection technology. Got it.

The explosive detectors are another layer of prevention. First would be the intelligence/police work, as recently demonstrated last week. After that, we have our airport screening process, which would involve explosive detection. The last line would be the air marshalls and general public on board the planes.

But...once again...now that we no longer have to worry about explosives, everything's much better.

...I say take from the poor and spend it on defense, detection, all that stuff and get poor people to apply for all the new jobs. They'll need everything from floor sweepers to technicians and all levels of ability and aptitude.

I don't agree with all of his votes, I'll admit. Though one can raise the question of how many F-22's and F-35's we really need when our primary enemies' air forces could be wiped out with a squadron of WW I bi-planes, let alone our current weapons systems.

Tanks, 'copters, missiles, etc....keep 'em coming.

6 .....*million*?

I'm sorry, but in Washington budgets, especially Homeland Security, this is chump change. This is the equivalent of leaving a 14.95% tip instead of the standard 15. They had to make up for money unspent, and this was a place they trimmed. Any complaints about the other areas they trimmed? Or is this only making news because the terrorists actually tried to use liquid explosives? Instead of all the other areas Washington "wastes" money on?

You really have to admit, this is stretching to find fault.

Yeah...only $6 Million. This is chump change...so why try and hold it back? What we don't know is where they wanted to divert it to, but appearantly it wasn't going to something more important, because the bi-partisan committee prevented it from being diverted.

And no...it's not not a stretch to find "fault". In fact, I wasn't "faulting" anyone. Just merely pointing out a fact that may fly under the radar as the GOP'ers are spinning their "you need us to be safe" propaganda.
