I'll go on the record as saying I'm opposed to wasting money on things like explosives detectors for airports. Suppose we had spent billions of dollars developing detectors that can detect the smallest trace of plastic explosives... does that mean the terrorists will keep using plastic explosives? No. They are smart and adaptive, and the cost to change the chemical formulas of explosives is a nothing compared to the cost to develop new technologies to detect them. The US could blow our whole GDP trying to develop new technologies to detect every possible threat material and still leave us vulnerable because the terrorists make yet another change.

Technology isn't the answer to the threat. We've learned that from the Israelis who have a lot more experience dealing with terrorists than we have. The answer is learning how to spot terrorists based on behaviors at the airport. The Israelis can do this in airports where almost everyone looks Arab... imagine what we could do at airports where there are relatively few Middle Easterners.

Yeah...only $6 Million. This is chump change...so why try and hold it back? What we don't know is where they wanted to divert it to, but appearantly it wasn't going to something more important, because the bi-partisan committee prevented it from being diverted.

And no...it's not not a stretch to find "fault". In fact, I wasn't "faulting" anyone. Just merely pointing out a fact that may fly under the radar as the GOP'ers are spinning their "you need us to be safe" propaganda.

My point is, it looks like they made cuts across the board, a little here, a little there. They tried to cut funds in other areas too, but they're not getting attention, are they? So it strikes me as making a mountain out of a molehill, which is why not surprisingly it appears on MSNBC but not much from other news outlets.

I don't agree with all of his votes, I'll admit. Though one can raise the question of how many F-22's and F-35's we really need when our primary enemies' air forces could be wiped out with a squadron of WW I bi-planes, let alone our current weapons systems.

Tanks, 'copters, missiles, etc....keep 'em coming.

WHO cares? Expand the defense industry. Create GREAT jobs. We don't use 'em? Scrap 'em and make new ones. We're gonna figure out all sorts of things through massive expenditure of military dollars; new energy systems, ways of controlling and processing information, new materials, the ability to render obsolete the threat of missiles, ways of dealing with nuclear waste, you name it.

Aging aircraft. F-15's, F-18's, and AV-8's aren't going to last much longer. Heck, AV-8's fall out of the sky on a routine basis. Considering the time required to develop and test a new aircraft, they need to get started well before the old ones start falling out of the sky on a routine basis. After JSF, all there will be are UCAVs. My guess is that when they start fielding them, they'll have a few flying for test, training, and patrol, but most of them will be crated up until they are needed (which means that "aging aircraft" won't be much of a problem).
