Sonny Perdue - What a Fine American

Well I am glad to see that you did your research. But what I do not understand is how the flags can be lowered to half-staff when people like Martin Luther King are assassinated when they have never been in elective office. There are always special circumstances, Bru, and I think that the first black mayor of the city warrents the lowering of the flag. In fact, Perdue said that he would lower the flag on the day of Jackson's internment but refused to do so on the day of his death. So wouldn't he be violating state law then?

Why should the first black mayor of anyplace get special treatment? Is this part of that affirmative action thing you were so gung-## about?

Dems... why do you think there are laws about flying the flag in this manor? You say that the flags should be flown at half-staff/mast because this guy was the first black mayor. Were the flags flown that way for the first white mayor? Should they be flown that way if a really popular white mayor passes? How about when the second black mayor passes? How about when the next really popular black councilman passes? There are rules because if there weren't you would have people pressing for this treatment for anyone they felt was important enough to warrant it.

So this guy Jackson was the first black mayor of Atlanta... who outside of the black community in Atlanta and civil rights junkies cares? Should the KKK have the right to petition the governor to have the flags lowered when their grand poobah dies? Their poobah is just as important to them as this Jackson guy is to you. And how can you compare this Jackson fellow to Martin Luther King? No, MLK was not an elected official, but he was a prominent national leader and you might want to see if there was a Presidential decision authorizing the lowering of the flags after the assassination (I'll bet there was). If you check out the US code you see that the President can authorize the lowering of the flags for anyone he/she wants to.

In answer to your last question, yes, if he orders the flags lowered during the internment he will be violating the law. This should come as no surprise to you Liberals who are always clamoring for the ignoring and/or suspension of laws that you disagree with or don't find convienient. Illegal quota systems are great... provided they benefit the "right" people. Denying Constitutional freedoms is great... provided the "right" freedoms are being denyed. People who commit crimes should be given a pass if those crimes are committed for the "right" reason. There's nothing new about this case, just another politician caving into political pressure from minority groups and deciding to suspend the rule of law to keep them happy. If I have a beef with Perdue it's that he's yet another Republican who is willing to ignore the law in order to keep the Blacks happy.

Not to go on a rant here, but if Liberals spent half as much of the time and energy they put into trying to avoid, get around, or justify the breaking of, laws they they don't like into changing the laws, they would be much better off. You don't see parades of NRA members charging down the streets of Washington breaking into shops, looting, and buying illegal guns because we don't like the NFAs. We work to change the laws we disagree with.

Here's a suggestion... maybe you should start a string about the need to change the laws regarding who flags can be lowered for rather than take a cheap, disengenuous, shot at Gov. Perdue. Now, with all that being said, why don't you just admit that you started this whole string for the sole purpose of painting Perdue with a racist brush without even thinking that there might be another reason for what he did?

LBJ ordered that April 7th, 1968 would be a national day of mourning for MLK and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.
