i think I carried that title last week :frown: I'll gladly pass it on though

but since I'm commenting ... if mormons have done away with the concept of plural marriages, why did I just read about that dude in Utah within the last year who had a bunch of young wives, one of which was below the age of consent when they shacked up on her 'lucky night' and produced a child. the guy is in jail for rape or sex with a minor or something like that now.

then, there was another editorial recently in a magazine from this lady who left her husband's harem of wives and was cast aside by her own immediate family (they guy she married was like her 2nd cousin or something).

I don't think the concept has died; I think it's not nearly publicized like it used to, and they have just found other ways to hide it by having (from what I read) these ritualistic ceremonies where they aren't 'legally' married to a bunch of women; they just go through the typical ceremony stuff.

Christy, what were you drinking when you started this thread anyway,? :twitch:

Here's Tigger's very first post.

The author of this column is a liberal but not an ACLU extremist. (Sort of like the difference between George Will and Michael Savage.) What do you think of privatizing all marriages, instead of having government-issued marriage licenses?

http://slate.msn.com/id/2085127

...the solution is to end the institution of government-sanctioned marriage. Or, framed to appeal to conservatives: End the government monopoly on marriage. Wait, I've got it: Privatize marriage. These slogans all mean the same thing. Let churches and other religious institutions continue to offer marriage ceremonies. Let department stores and casinos get into the act if they want. Let each organization decide for itself what kinds of couples it wants to offer marriage to. Let couples celebrate their union in any way they choose and consider themselves married whenever they want. Let others be free to consider them not married, under rules these others may prefer. And, yes, if three people want to get married, or one person wants to marry herself, and someone else wants to conduct a ceremony and declare them married, let 'em. If you and your government aren't implicated, what do you care?

Isn't she on marriage number 2????????

I tink she meant 'married to lots of people AT THE SAME TIME' aka polygamy, which Mormonism has been infamous for. I don't think she meant divorce and remarriage.

Close but not quite true.. pluralism was outlawed by the Mormon church due to political influence and to be better accepted by the public. Pluralism wasn't stopped due to revelation, or God's will, it was purely political... Amazing what you will do when the cannons are pointed inward toward the city..

There are actually two Mormon Churches.. on is the Mainstream Latter Day Saints the other is the "Reformed Mormon Church".. Their beliefs differ in many ways.. one being they still practice pluralism.. they also believe the president of their church has to be a direct descendant of the founder of the Church.. Joseph Smith..

In todays age I see many benefits to plural marriages.. FINANCES being one.. Child rearing being another.. if there are three, four or five adults in the home MAYBE one can afford to stay home with the kids.. and I'd be able to drive the convertible Jag I always wanted!!
