NEW YORK -- A New York man who said he donated sperm to a female co-worker as a friendly gesture — and then sent presents and cards to the child over the years — is legally considered the father and may have to pay child support for the college-bound teenager, according to a judge’s ruling.

I might add that his female co-worker and "her" friend wanted a child. There were no strings attached - it was just a friendly gesture.

It's been my experience that a friendly gesture is always required before a sperm donation.

Yea, but...this was two young ladies that couldn't have a baby so they asked if he would be willing to donate with no strings attached. Now, 18 years later the girls can't afford to send the child to college so they file a suit in court. It just doesn't seem fair. Besides, who said parents are obligated to provide a college education. Yea, it is the right thing to do but I don't recall it being the law.

And the agreement the two mommies have is probably all oral.

Yeah, but he has given the child things signed "Daddy" and let them put his name on the birth certificate so I think he is probably stuck on this one. I'm not saying this is fair by any means. I see they are calculating how much child support he will owe for the years between 18 & 21. Thank God they are not trying to back sue him from birth to 18!

Well I agree that the oral agreement about the sperm donation may be a bit hard to swallow.
