Sprouting mustard seeds

I have this idea that I want to grow mustard. Supposedly you just germinate the seeds by soaking them in water until they sprout, then plant them in soil. Anyone ever tried this? I know it's a long shot and somewhat strange.

Not just water.

Two inches of cotton wool in a container damp to the touch, spread mustard seeds.over the top, place in the sun. Walla!

:yay: Have you actually done it before? Because if you have, I'll hit you up with questions as they come along.

Actually, what we've done is to place the seeds on a moist paper towel and place in a zip lock baggie that is closed almost all the way, but not entirely....it needs a little bit of fresh air movement inside the bag.

Place in a sunny area. When you see that the paper towel is getting dry, simply open the baggie and add just a smidgen of additional water. Reseal almost all the way, and return the baggie to a sunny place.

When you see some decent growth of the sprouts, you can either harvest them then, or take the paper towel and plant the whole thing with a thin layer of dirt/compost/peat moss on top.

What a great idea! Would you get the seeds from Burpee's or would one from a spice rack work?

Supposedly one from the spice rack would work. What gave me the idea is that I got my Penzey's catalog the other day, and under the various mustard seeds they suggested sprouting them for use, and growing them for their leaves to use in salads, etc.

Do you plan on growing your own lettuce and tomatos to go with it? Sounds like a good idea. Let us know how it works out!

What planting medium are you planning on putting your seedlings into after they germinate?
