St. Mary's Co Commissioners/Sheriff Races

Looks like a Dennis Hubscher has filed to run for Commissioner President and a Joe St. Clair has filed to run against Lawrence Jarboe. Any thoughts?

Also the Sheriff's race is heating up with Kevin SOmerville running as a Democrat against Sheriff Zylak and Tim Cameron is running on the Republican side. Any thoughts?

What is the point of Sheriffs running a partisan race? The position doesn't seem partisan to me.

The Sheriff's race gets silly every 4 years. Zylak has done a good job, does the right thing for his officers, and deserves 4 more years.

The Republican party in our county is lame, thus Dennis Hubscher as a candidate. (And I'm a Republican!) I'm sure Hubscher is a fine man. Just not Presidential material especially if you compare him to Merle Evans, who should easily take the Democratic primary against Russell and Hewitt. Evans does his homework, and will work harder than anyone in the slate for the people of St. Mary's County.

Joe St Clair will probably be a popular challenger to Jarboe. For some reason, voters got rid of Jarboe and then brought him back. St Clair owned the Early Bird for years, and more recently Swing and Swat in Hollywood. He's the new chairman of the Planning Commission and has a lot of practical experience that would benefit St. Mary's County.

Zylak has to learn how to manage our money better. His budget request increases have been outrageous.

Hubscher, dont know much about him. Evans may be the choice for the Dems

St. Clair & Jarboe make an interesting race.

Oh and Oz great picture!

I don't disagree - but its ultimately up to the Board of County Commissioners to approve the Sheriff's budget. He wanted to add to the ranks of the department and the BoCC didn't approve. Good for his officers, but in the end, not for the taxpayers. It would be very unstable if a small business / company, with a budget the size of the Sheriff's office turned over their Chief Executive every 4 years. Thats another reason I'd like to give Zylak another 4 years.

Merle Evans will get a ton of Republican support if he can get through the primary. But business background, work ethic, demeanor, intelligence and leadership skills will serve him well with both parties. I wish he'd change parties!

After 8 of the last 12 years with Jarboe, I'd be willing to let St. Clair have 4 years in office. Not because Jarboe has done anything really wrong, but Joe is much more down to earth, and he doesn't have to plug in his car or tow a generator behind it.

The sheriff's race doesnt seem partisan, but they have to choose up sides somewhere. Everyone knows that an independent rarely gets elected. (...there IS the Vonzel Ward exception in Calvert, but he turned out to be a criminal.)

A county police department (...and chief...)is a bad idea for two reasons.

1. It eliminates YOUR say in who is in charge of the law-enforcement for the county and leaves it up to the county commissioners. Scary.

2. It is MUCH more costly because constitutuonally, all Maryland counties MUST have a sheriff's office with the responsibility to serve warrants, process, and provide court security. This sheriff's office would have to be in addition to any police department established. Two administrations would be expensive.

The cost of living is outrageous; the growth of this area has increased, so of course the budget request is going to seem outrageous.

I am a transplant into this county and know nothing about the candidates, but if that is suppose to be a reason for me not to vote for Zylak, it isn't a very good one.

Can't really speak to that.

Comparing the field of 3 though in the race for County Commissioner President, he's still at the top of the heap. You will find people with an axe to grind with any candidate if you look hard enough.
