St Mary's Hospital

:burning: My daughter was hospitalized over the weekend with an ectopic pregnancy. She is fine now, but we got a phone message yesterday from St Mary's breast feeding center wanting to know if she was having any problems or questions about breast feeding her new baby

You would think they would look at her file and see why she was there rather than just blindly calling everyone who checked into the labor and delivery section.

I plan on phoning the nice lady that left the message to explain to her the error in her calling system. :smack:

I'm glad I got the message instead of my daughter. :ohwell:

Before you go bizzurk, that is standard procedure, and they don't keep your file at the front desk, they leave the number, and they will call every day/every few days to make sure things are going well...plus they do run different shifts, but when you check in, your contact info is written down and put upfront...

Atleast, thats how it went when we were there....

So I would just calmly call them and let them know...

It may be procedure but Softballkid is right. The procedure has a flaw if the follow up call was for the purpose of asking how the new baby is doing when the patient was actually treated for an ectopic pregnancy.

I would CALMY let them know of the mistake so maybe they can make better notes in the future somehow. It doesn't hurt to mention their error. I'd hate for them to have done that to somebody who just had a stillborn baby- that would send me over the edge.

I hope you daughter is doing alright. I went through a miscarriage and it is tough. Best wishes to her.

Since it's illegal for them to look at her file, blind calling seems like a good option.

oh, I'm not going to call to chew out a$$, just to let them know that it was insensitive to call not knowing the circumstances.

As for medical privacy, there must be some way to show that a live birth occured or it didn't, like those particular files not be turned over to the breast feeding department.

:yeahthat:

You would think that the breast feeding department would only get name/phone number for patients who actually LEFT the hospital with a newborn. :bonk:

Hugs to you and your daughter Spookthis. :huggy:

No, blind calling is a stupid option. Still births do happen. The last thing Mom needs in the weeks following the burial of her child is a call asking how well the baby is eating. If the hospital cannot verify there was a live birth, they should not be calling.

I had a natural delivery of my daughter - NO stiches.

They wanted to check my stitches at least 4 times and asked if I wanted my baby circumsized! :yikes:

:lmao: I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that one. That is crazy. I had a male nurse after my c-section who was afraid to come two steps into my room. He told me to try the bottle since the baby wasn't b'feeding easily and suggested I calm down when I was crying at the lack of help he was offering (my hubby had gone home to check on the other kiddo). I think it is safe to say he isn't working the maternity ward after I had a small chat with the personnel there. :smack: Male nurses don't bother me if they know what they are doing. This guy was clueless!

I delivered my daughter couple months ago and a nurse came in and asked if I had any questions. I asked her something about my stitches and she told me I didn't have any. I told her I'm 100% positive I have stitches but she said I was mistaken. (Dr. Polko even told me "I'm stitching you up now") She told me she had to go get my chart to see if I was right. She came back in the room 20 minutes later and said she must of gotten me mistakened with the girl in the next room. Honest mistake but she shouldn't of told me I was wrong. P.S. The room I was in had dryed up blood all over the bathroom florr ewwwwwww. Most of the nurses there were friendly and really gave me a lot of help with breatfeeding. My daughter gave me a hicky the first time she latched on :lmao:

Since when is it illegal for hospital staff to look at a patient's chart? It's illegal for them to tell anyone that's not employeed there what said chart contains but it's not illegal (to the best of my knowledge) for them to look at the chart). I worked at a radiology office when I graduated from high school as a receptionist and I routinely had to go through patient files looking for reports to make copies of and give to patients or fax to the refering doctor.

****UPDATE***

Someone from the breast feeding follow up department left me a message on my cell yesterday afternoon. They were extremely sorry for the mix-up that happened with my daughter. She was very sympathetic and apologetic. She assured me that they would take every measure they could to be sure this didn't happen again.

Since it wasn't my daughter that got the message, her feelings were spared. If they really look over their processes to stop this from happening again, it makes me glad some kind of good can come from this. :huggy:
