When was the last time anybody got a cola? My wife teaches and she hasn't had one in 3 years, so it's not just the SD that isn't getting colas.

And the Sheriff Deputies work rotating shifts 365 a year
and deal with the worst of people and don't get off for
holidays or "retreats" or whatnot. They also have to work
all summer unlike some others.

But they got their budget cut. The "educators" got theirs
INCREASED! And THEY can't even seem to produce a
literate person after all of that "education".

I have not had a step increase in 5 years despite the fact I have continued to move up the scale. I can't remember the last COLA adjustment. My insurance continues to go up. My take home pay keeps going down. Yes, I only work full time plus many hours a week for 10 months a year and work during my time off to stay ahead.

About money I feel the BOCC should have given the BOE enough money to maintain a minimum budget at 2010-2011 levels. The BOCC should have given more funding to each agency to keep up with increased costs in energy. The BOCC needs to fund safety at level that will maintain a safe place to live and work. Maybe the BOCC should look at what the voters want instead of thier individual agendas.

Enough of my soap box.

Yeah, but if a teenager mouths off to them, they can slap on the cuffs. A teacher can only say, " Thank you sir, may I have another?"!

SoMdNews.com: Educators say thanks, but more money needed

Can't believe that they are complaining when the county commissioners caved in and gave them $750,000 more. Meanwhile sheriff deputies are going without a pay increase or even a cost of living increase (and no I am not a deputy). Some people will never be happy.

The $750,000 "cave in" will still result in drastic increases in class sizes. This increase in class size will, statistically, result in lower overall student performance. That's why educators are upset. I don't understand why people are having difficulty understanding this.

Especially considering that within the next 2 years Maryland will be required to base 50% of an educator's evaluation on student performance due to Race to the Top requirements.

How so, glitch? As I recall, the last word from the Superintendent was that with this, he was able to save the jobs. And, as I recall, the jobs in question were para educators, not teachers, so the class size wouldnt change.

My gawd! They're losing 18 teaching positions, throughout the whole county. Just how is this going to result in lower student performance? And you have a problem with basing an educator's evaluation on student performance? Why is that a problem? Everyone in the workforce today is evaluated on their performance. Are teacher's supposed to have a different standard?

Actaully, there are roughly 60 fewer postions system wide. Most of them were eliminated via resignations and retirements. After that, 18 had to be laidoff.

I agree - I haven't had a COLA or any Merit Increases or anything in 3 years - going on 4 but yet the BOE gets whatever they want 9 outta 10 times - I am 100% behind getting good teachers and giving our children the best education - but also - while my health insurance, gas, utilities, and all that cost goes up - my paychecks going down as I have also been furloughed - my whole building has.. and considering out've the monies we get from the state - the BOE gets over HALF of our budget and still wants more.. when will our Sheriff's dept or local gov't get anything? besides a furlough day - plus we've laid off quite a few departments ??

I thought the BOE's portion of the County budget was more like 40%.

Yes, the schools do seem to get just about everything they want including the palace in Leonardtown. State employees haven't gotten a raise or COLA in more than 5 years. Now, in addition to yearly increases in health costs, the raise in the pension contribution of 2% for the first 2 years is going into the State's General Fund so state workers are being double taxed, plus the $750 stipend the governor gave out is going to have to pay for a mandatory union dues to AFSCME.

When other county employees are required to have a Bachelors, Masters or Doctorite degree to maintain their employment then the field will be level. Until then, we have to pay to have educated people educating our children.

Nothing against the cops, but the education level is not the same as as an educator. Do you really want a high school graduate teaching your kids?

If that was the case would we want a bunch of English, History and Ed majors teaching our kids? Or would we rather have people smart enough to get Physics, Math, Computer Science and Chemistry degrees teaching our kids?

Did you know that all the "worst people" were children who attended public schools and that teachers aren't allowed to use force when needed.

Secondly, teachers work 10 months and "get paid for 10 months." You would still have to pay more if teachers worked another two months.

Lastly, do police officers who work more than 40 hours do it voluntarily? Or do they get overtime? Teachers do not get paid overtime.

Society should embrace both teachers and police officers. It should not be a contest. Both should get funded well.

Negative. This horse has been beat to death and it's a fact that teachers receive an annual salary for 10 months work. Search the forums, you'll find the thread.

Yes, everything is going up. Teachers will also be paying 2% more toward pension and that money will also go to the general fund. I agree this is taxing educators and state employees to work. I am not sure if anyone has every checked to see what our governor pays towards his pension but it is nothing. After 8 years of service he will get 2/3 of his salary for life. Teachers have dues if they choose to join the local teacher association.
