Start-up menu in XP

But wait, there's more...
Can someone tell me where to find the start-up for XP on my computer? I had something in there that I used to need right off the bat, but no longer do; so I want to take it off my start-up when I first boot up my laptop. TIA!

And just for clarification, I'm not looking to customize my start menu; rather, alter the programs that automatically start-up/load when I boot the computer on.

That's strange ... I just did that, and the program isn't showing up.

But it still opens up every time I reboot. :tap:

It's probably buried in the startup area of the Registry.

You can also check this: click Start/Run. type in SYSEDIT. Look thru the various screens to see if you spot it.

You wanna go to:

Start ---> Run --->and type msconfig

the startup tab is all the way to the right, be careful in there....

Found it! Thanks! :smoochy:

But there was a LOT of stuff in there that is unidentifiable by the name. How do I differentiate between what I need and don't?

In My Opinion
easy way
start
settings
control panel
the choose "Software Explorers"
make sure the category drop down is set to startup programs.
you can manipulate it from there.
this also shows the hidden stuff that ends up in startup that you dont even know about.

Also good place to look for malicious ware that has been added to the startup.

you can google search individual entries, odds are.. you dont need 90% or more of the #### that is in there!

use the method I described above and you can get an explanation of the program.
you can also do a google on whatever program it is you dont know about and find out what it is and how to get rid of it if you want to.

most virus writers fail to load the uninstall on your system when they infect you.

They're all located in:

HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

except for two that I know I put there, which are located in "Common files".

Do I do a google search for the command name to determine what it is?

Software Explorers is a part of Windows Defender... she might not even have that installed....:otter:

If you are talking about the actual executable, you can google that "whatever.exe"

You can actually type:

what is whatever.exe (obviously whatever being the file name for all the smartasses)

Awesome; it launched MS Defender, and that was a snap! I just removed everything that had "publisher unknown"; all the others appeared legit. Thanks! :yay:
