Storage Auctions

I see them all the time in the papers. Just wondering if anyone has ever attended one of the storage auctions? Do they actually have them or is it just a scare for people to pay their bills?

Yes they really do have them. I know a lady that goes to the auctions and buys the ones she thinks are a good deal. Then she has a yard sale and sells everything that she does not want, she does this about once a month.

I know someone that bids on them too. They sell things on ebay and have yard sales. Make really good money too.

They are in fact legit. When they are placed in the papers, the rentor is at least 60 days behind. By law the storage facility has to place their name in the legal section of the paper where the the auction will take place. The rentor has up until the day of the sale to pay their bill.

When the day of the sale occurs,it is held as a Public Sale. Bidders gather around a locked unit. The lock is cut in front of everyone, opened up, and people must bid on the viewed unit in its entirely. Some units go for as little a $25, and they can go upwards to the $500-700 range. There are some units that will have nothing but a box in it, but others can be a jackpot. I have seen units that had 6 tvs, jewelry boxes, and tools. It really depends. It is sad to see people's things go, but the storage facility sells it only after MANY MANY attempts to collect money, including certified letters. The self storage locations in Calvert normally hold theirs the third Wednesday of every month. You can check out their schedule at:

and click tghe "specials" tab.

I went to the one on 235 before. They auctioned a few units and most of the stuff was just trash. I think that people who rent the units grab most of their belongings and leave everything they don't want because it is easier for them. They don't have to haul away trash and things they don't want.

I've heard of people finding cool things and collectors items before though.
